cold heat? eh?

just seen an advert from the good people at JML for their new wonder product "cold heat", a soldering iron that is cold to the touch, yet melts solder on contact. erm... how on earth does that work?

the advert clearly shows a chap sticking the tip in his finger (erm.. a neat trick if you can do it) but yet he doesnt get burned. smoke and mirrors i reckon...

It must work on the same principle as those hobs you can get that are cold but will boil/fry things in a pan. I've seen a demo of them where they stick a piece of paper in-between the pan and the hob, and the water continues to boil. Remove the paper and there's no scorch marks on it. Bloody clever!

Induction perhaps? Just a thought, no idea if it would be practicable.

Looks like it is hot when "on" but cools off very rapidly so you can touch it

Those hobs are even more clever, as you can actually touch them when they're on and they're cold!

but my soldering iron will cool even quicker than that. in fact, it starts cool and stays cool for ages. then gets hot for about a second, just long enough to burn my index finger, then goes cold again. so, inadvertently, Ive been researching this product for JML for years. for "coldheat" read "crap soldering iron" .

please don't let that be all there is to it.
