Mods if in wrong place please feel free to relocate.

So rumours were rife that the Severn Bridge tolls were to cease in March 2018 yet in the last day or so that the 2 bridges return to public ownership in January 2918. Good news you'd think but apparently the tolls are expected to continue until late 2018 - what the blistering fk?

What happens to the £millions they will collect during that time? Guess there will be redundancy payments for all the toll staff to pay for. Ripping out the toll booths, gantries, roadworks to put in new surfaces and new white lines, crash barriers and the like. But what's going to happen to the rest of the money. Someone somewhere is making a 70mph Buck out of this and it sure ain't the public.

I very rarely use it, even though I'm fairly local. I think I could get a bit more annoyed if i lived and worked on opposite sides of the bridge.

Will the bridge still be there in 900 years? wink

I go down to Cardiff quite regularly from East Anglia and always go cross country and down the M50. Takes a little longer but the bridge toll is ridiculous.

I have sympathy for anyone who has to use it regularly.

Can't they leave the toll booths in, but with automatic barriers? I quite enjoy the toll booth Grand Prix and this will dent my fun a bit.

LOL - based on the fannying around of some drivers at the moment I can envisage the numpties and mouth breathers still sitting there with the barrier up looking for they have to pay....

Yes probably.

One thing they will lose though is the revenue generated by the camera van that used to hide high on the left catching drivers who hadn't fully slowed down to 50mph about a half mile out from the booths.

Thinking about that further they'll probably needlessly leave the 50mph limit in place so they can screw people for more money!

If the bridges are in public ownership then the money will go into the public purse. If the tolls cover the costs of the roadworks and street furniture that's needed once the tolls have been abolished then it seems like a good idea to me. Why should my taxes be used to sort out a bridge that I've never used and probably never will.

I think they should leave the toll in place however still scrap the charges as planned. Leaving the toll in place allows it to become a fantastic (and free!) venue for an opportune race.

There are many many bridges on the motorway network I've never used but have still been centrally funded and have not been the subject of tolls right from the start (so they've come out of my taxes), why the Severn bridge had to be a toll road I don't know but it's been a burden on motorists and a tax on Wales for 40 odd years.

What about all the other roads you don't use. What the fire service that hasn't put out a fire for you, or that time you didn't get mugged and then police didn't need to investigate anything. You should be getting some sort of rebate.

Look at what happened with the Forth Road Bridge a few years after the tills were removed.
Budget cuts, 'deferred' maintenance, closed for emergency works at the end of 2015. Massive inconvenience and long diversionary routes.

I thought the last sentence would be jumped on and the first bit ignored.

It's currently a toll road, if it continues to raise tolls to pay for the works needed to make it a "free" road eventually then I don't see a problem. You might not like it, but so be it. I pay tolls on other roads that you probably don't.

Nobody is making a personal fortune out of it, despite the initial suggestion that they are.

Rumour has it that even if the current tolls disappear other rolls will be imposed, similar to the tolls on other roads.
There is a concurrent huge issue and debate about a new road to bypass the Newport/Brynglas tunnel section due to the massive traffic congestion there. A decision is expected at some time( more navel watching going on) so I can see a toll being part of the plan, certainly for the new road.
It find it disgracefull that the French company have been given so much leeway to "recoup" losses?
A similar situation exists in some Welsh hospitals re private company parking charges. These are apparently due to be changed when contracts end.
Personally I have very little confidence in the Welsh Assembly to get things right having seen and been affected by their poor(incompetent) decisions re healthcare etc .

The instructor on the speeding awareness course that I went on 10 years ago admitted to being caught by that one.
