How good/bad at GT4 are you?

National license 1 - I struggled a little to get all bronze on the easiest licence, managed a few silvers and one gold. This took me a good few hours.

National License 2 - On the second easiest license I got one or two silvers and the rest bronze. This took me an afternoon and I found it quite a challenge.

International License 1 - Taken me hours and hours to get a handful of bronzes and there are still about 6 I cant do.

I haven't attempted the races yet but am not too hopeful about the outcome when I do.

Was this tough learning curve the same for you or am I just exceptionally crap?

I found International A quite tough, well, the last two tests.

Special I havent attempted yet.

Bloody ell. Is there some kind of 'knack' to this game which I just don't get?

Need for Speed was never this bad!

I would go with the exceptionally crap theory... But then I have been playing the GT games since the first one, with a bit of practice you will get much better.

Must admit that I didn't find it a problem whizzing through them all, but only bronze on most of them. I might go back to try for the silver and gold reward cars on them later...

The missions, now there a different matter, I did the first 10 now probs but the middle set where you have a certain number of laps to get past are very hard. The later ones are ok and good fun.

did all the licences got up2 30% complete got really bored of it and traded it in for GTR for the pc much better

My advice would be to go and start racing with the licences you already have - get some practice on the tracks and in some races (sunday cup, clubman cup, etc). A lot of the licences are easier once you know the tracks better. Once you've done all you can without the i-B or i-A licence - then go back and I'm sure you'll find them easier.

I think that might sum up your problem, Need for Speed is very arcadey and GT4 won't let you get away with just foot to the floor and full left/right steering and slide it round. You need to be a lot smoother in all your actions or you will be soooo much slower around.

Had trouble with the 'Ring pace-car lap. Got all the way round on my first attempt only to touch a cone in the last corner and fail it. Took several further attempts to get it right.

My tips:

1. Use manual gears. You have a lot more control over things like wheelspin - e.g. you can use 2nd or 3rd instead of the automatic 1st or 2nd in tight corners to minimise the chance of spinning out.

2. Assuming you're using a standard controller, learn to be smooth on the X button so you don't have "all or nothing" throttle.

3. Slow down for the corners more than you think you need. Ignore the gear indicator on screen - it's regularly way off the mark. Slow in, fast out is better than quite fast in, onto grass, backwards.

Better still, map the throttle and brake control to the right analogue stick and the steering to the left analogue stick. This gives you much more precise control.

I did most of the tests on the first or second go. The only test I had to do more than a couple of times was the Bentley le Mans S licence test. They were all much easier in this game.

Didnt bother going for golds though. I was just happy to get them out of the way.

I'm OK, I would say, I must admit that getting the first 4 licences didn't present too much of a problem. However I'm stuck on the 'ring qualification lap to get my special licence. Not played GT4 for couple of days now so I need to get back on it.

I'm stuck on the two ice tests for the Special License. Tried for about ninety minutes yesterday, and couldn't do either of them. Can't comment on the 'Ring lap yet because I can't bloody get there! Other licenses weren't a problem at all, and I'm having no problem winning races (30% complete)

Unlikely you'll be needing full throttle on the ice or you'll spin. Only open her up when the cars fully straight. You using the wheel or controller?

The controller. I keep oversteering out to the snowbanks at the side of the road. Went and did something else because I was getting very annoyed with it. Be a lot easier with a wheel

Got the special license last night. The 2nd snow one (in the Pug 205) is definitely the hardest. Took me about 15 goes. Slow in, fast is out is the way to go.

The 'ring one, just try and get a lap in, don't worry about the time. You'll be amazed, there is plenty of time.

Have tried this - the problem I find that it's difficult to keep the right stick moving in a purely up-down motion - I tend to roll it to one side which makes things a bit tricky. Would be nice if you could "lock" that stick so it was more like the forward / reverse stick on a radio control car.
