I'm a current owner of a 991.1 C2. After 4 years, I'm looking for a change, but struggling with inspiration. If you owned a 991.1 previously (or if you have an opinion!) what did you buy next?

I looking for a daily driver, ideally with a bit more refinement / tech, and no worse practicality.

Anything more exotic does not seem to be daily drivable (R8, Maserati, Aston). I'm not a speed freak (and live in the crowded South East), so near 600 bhp M5s. E63s, 911 Turbos don't appeal. I looked at a 991.2, but it does not feel a big enough change. I've tried a W205 C63, but I felt it was lacking "something", and the forums seem full of compaints about rattles / quality. I have not tried an M4, but the reviews are mixed. An S4/S5 might be an option, but they've stopped production and they seem to get stolen a lot!

I'm looking at a "left field" option next week, a Lexus LC500 v8. It's one of the last n/a v8s left, and as a GT might fit my needs. But it's a big thing to thread through London, plus has the horrible Lexus touchpad.

But otherwise, what's left? If I had driveway space, I'd consider two cars. But these days modern cars seem to be missing that "magic", and the older cars that have it are getting less daily-able and miss the tech conveniences.

Ideas please!

Left of field....no , but may I suggest the sensible next car , it has bigger boot and rear seats...it's a GTR . Fast , no frills serious car. Been a Porsche driver for nearly 20 years but my next car is a GTR . Try one and see if you like it. Good luck with your choice .

Good point - you sound like my wife - details , details - we're fantasy car shopping here - please don't bring your sensible practical ways onto this thread smile

Blimey, you're wrestling with the same problem I am.

What we need is the ability to swap cars with someone for say a month to see if what you're thinking works...

GTR sounds like a plan but not sure if after a month the novelty would have worn off.
Lambo Gallardo is attractive (to me) but scared about clutches & run costs..
RS4/RS6 Avant, more left field, but will the steering be annoying?

So many to choose from.. Get 'em all and bask in the glow of having done so..

Many thanks for the input so far! Budget would be ~75k max, but I'll happily spend less for the right motor.

A few comments on the ideas:

  • F-Type: Good suggestion - I had not considered this. I tried a convertible when they first came out, cross-shopping versus the 911. It did not grab me then, but maybe it has improved since? I would be going for a hard-top. Practicality seems a bit worse than the 911 (but bigger boot?).
  • Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio: I've considered this, regularly driving past an Alfa garage and admiring a red QF on the forecourt. But the reports of issues put me off.
  • AMG GT: I mentally discounted this after being disappointed by the C63. Is the experience dramatically better for the AMG GT? It does suffer from being wide and less practical than the 911.
  • GTR: Good suggestion. I'd ruled this out as being too hardcore - harsh ride, etc. Although I saw something about the newer versions being more positioned as GTs. Thoughts on this?
  • Audi: I'd be more tempted by the S4/S5/S6 than the RS4/RS5/RS6, as I'm not motivated by speed alone. The S6 is at the end of its life. S4/S5 is more tempting: I should test-drive to see if it clicks. I do not know how much character the V6 has.
  • New TVR - would be fantastic - but this would be a weekend car only. I'm not brave enough to daily this! smile
A few other ideas from me:

  • Mustang: A rare chance to get an n/a V8 before they die out. But would this feel like a downgrade versus the 911?
  • BMW: I'm a big fan of the straight 6. But the 340/440 are close to end of life, and a little boring perhaps. The 540 is tempting, if only to go for a completely different luxo-barge experience. But would I get bored of it quickly, plus it is bigger than I need.

Why are you discounting the R8? I had one as a daily driver a few years back and it was faultless.

Reason for asking about budget - if you could of stretched to £105k I'd of said you MUST try a 991.2 GTS. Fantastic car.

After a 991 where do you go - because 99.9% of everything else is going to feel like a downgrade to a 911. I've driven a lot of cars and the 911 is still king.

Couple of options -

Porsche Cayenne V8d. I went from 911 (997 GT3 and 997 GTS) to C63, M3, M3CSL, 1M, Boxster Spyder, GT4 and a few other cars too. Also driven a lot of stuff but my Cayenne (3.0d) has been the longest I've ever kept a vehicle. Get one with a good / big spec and I'm not sure you'll feel like you've downgraded. It's a great daily vehicle and there are some mega deals atm.

Porsche Macan GTS. Not driven one but know a few people who have and all have said it's very good. The 3.0d is also very good. If you want to be a bit flash then get the turbo - I've driven it and it's rapid!

M4 CS. Looks great and best of the M3/4 range but too much money at £80k+. Wait and they'll drop.

Alpina. Something from the Alpina factory - I don't know quite how they do it but they make the regular BMW cars (M included) feel dull. I can't quite put my finger on it but Alpina's have a special feel to them.

Lots of other stuff like Cayman GTS etc but none will compare to what you already have..

I've owned a fair few GTR's previous to me coming on board with Porsche, The newer versions are a much better ride quality the suspension is much more compliant for every day use a good bet for sure.

However anything from now on, for you, is a downgrade ha ha ha ha .. I drove and are in the process of Specing a new Macan GTS, to be frank, what.a.motor!!! It's like a 911 but bigger, the handling is awesome, Has the potential to be a easy licence loser also! Sod the Turbo, the 3.0 is the sweet spot!

I may be doing the same - what suspension did the Macan have - air or normal. I currently have a Macan Diesel S - no suspension upgrade : PASM or Air and this handles really well as is.

Cheers smile

Was a Macan S Petrol. Normal suspension, I 100% will be going Air, as I found on crap roads the normal suspension was a tad too harsh.

My issue I have with Macan is the amount of blinking options to get a half decent Spec! Nearly £73k not including PCCB's which look awesome, but not sure if they ARE actually worth it? What's your thoughts??

Mines got standard brakes which are the only thing I don't like about the car as they can sometimes be difficult to actuate and can be a bit grabby - Doesn't the GTS come with big reds - I'm sure they'd be fine as I know you can chuck them about, but you can't get away from the weight of the car and as such your driving style adapts - It's got amazing balance for an SUV - but it's still an SUV and as such, i just can't see the value in adding PCCB's ( other than they are yellow and big and will look nice)

Please let me know if you manage a discount - I haven't started the journey yet - it's just a random thought at the moment - but any intel for the future is good - facelift must be due soon ?

Been told to expect a facelift 2018 (sometime), small changes as per normal, I'm not really fussed, I like the idea of the PCCB's for the rotational mass reduction, handling would benefit hugely.

A golf :-) just because you can afford a £150k car does not mean £150k cars are the best for the job in hand, I love driving my Golf Clubsport it's a hoot.

"I am looking for a daily driver, ideally with a bit more refinement / tech, and no worse practicality." you know I am right here lol
