I have to go to a business awards ceremony next month as my company has been nominated. The directors will be downstairs at the 'main table' for a full on meal, the rest of the plebs and managers (me included) will be in the balcony of this concert hall place with a 'finger buffet' (at £45 a head

Never having been to this type of do before and wanting to avoid hiring the full penguin suit if poss what exactly is acceptable attire for this sort of bash? Bearing in mind that we wont actually be mingling with the hoi-poloi to much extent (plus I'd imagine the directors will want us well out of the way as there's a FREE BAR!!)

Every man should have a good quality DJ in his closet. You never can tell...
...even better is to have the full black penguin suit with a nice ivory/off white jacket for those cocktail receptions in more tropical climes/cruise ships.

PS: Oh, and bow tie please, none of this noncomformist "regular tie" masquerading as a formal tie thing - unless you're going to a funeral

Yep you got to get a DJ mate. Last time I looked it was about £40 to hire one and you get all the carp like having to be especially careful you don't wreck it, etc. Bought one a few years ago for £150. Nothing special but it does the job for the 4 or 5 times a year I have to wear one.
Get a good dress shirt, avoid anything too frilly if you can, and get it with a collar one size bigger than your work shirts - trust me on this. After a hard evening eating and drinking you heat up and the collar can get tight so (rather than look like the chav at a wedding with the top button undone and bow-tie swinging around you neck) that extra inch makes all the difference (no jokes please ladies).
Don't go for braces, you'll look a tw@t.
Don't forget that with dress shirts you have to have cuff links. Dare I admit it but the laminated book of dreams provided me with a great pair that looks like F1 cars. (Well I like them and have been asked about them a number of times.)
Some dress shirts will also require that you buy studs as well - check you'll feel a right prat at 6 on Saturday night when dressing to see that you've forgotten those!
If you are on the round side a cumber band is a good idea and also hides that post stuffing your face loosening of the top button on your trousers! Be careful on the colour.
Simple ready tied hook and eye bow-tie unless you are really confident (if you are buy one as well just in case). Black only. Don't even look at the comedy ones.
Shoes should be plain, highly polished, black, leather soled and comfortable. I recommend Chinneys or Church's if you have the wallet for them. Have to say I have two pairs which I alternate every day and which are both 3 years old now so you get your money's worth! If you haven't already got good suit shoes and don't want to splash out please buy a cheap pair. Nothing shouts 'strategically shaved gorilla in a suit' more than a pair of Kickers with a DJ.
