Hi,

After Vmax I have been experiencing a lot of noise from the front offside wheel. A sort of intermittent sqeaking in town (<20mph) that corresponds with road speed.
It has nothing to do with application of the middle pedal, and seems as if there is on-off contact with the pad/disc: These are ceramics on a 996 GT3, hence the trepidation.

Could it be a build up of deposit? (car less than 3k)
A trapped stone?
Warping of disc?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Intermittent?

Sounds like something is warped.

Hmmmmmm, I'm no expert Sam, but I guess any of the 3 ideas you have could be true.

Trapped stones tend to make a consistent and persistent noise. I noticed that Adam's dad's 996 Ruf R Turbo had a really loud screaching noise at Vmax that settled quickly, I assume because it was a trapped stone.

It wouldn't take long for someone at the OPC to whip the wheel off and give you a quick answer. Obviously you will be worried about what they may say, but if they make noises about "the ceramics being knackered".......then take out your digital camera and say that you want to take photos, aks them are they sure?? etc etc. Take no prisoners, mate.

Methinks ceramic rotors don't warp. They may flake and fall apart, but they shouldn't warp.

at a guess it Sonds like it could be the anti squeel shims are not holding the pads of the disc. However dont have ceramics so dont know if they have the shims or not.
If that is the issue fix is cheep and quick. I have never seen a set of 996 breaks actyaly warp.

Most of what people think are 'warped' brake discs are in fact a build up of pad deposits because of poor bedding in, I have no idea what happens with ceramic discs. If the problem is intermittent or only at certain speeds I would also look to things like bushes and bearings.

Unfortunately the car was bought 'nearly new' so I can't comment on the bedding in of the brakes.

I will take it to an OPC and have them take a proper look.

Thanks for your replies, hopefully this will be the last I hear of it

That wasn't the sound I was talking about! Though it is a more worrying one!

Sam

edited to say. I see from your profile that you've got a GT3 as well. Steel brakes?
