I have not played a first person shooter since Time Crisis on the Playstation around 1997. I fancy playing a more modern version on my Xbox 360, I was thinking along the lines of one of the Call of Duty games but there are so many versions I am a bit lost. Is there one with a good single player mode, I don’t want to play online. It doesn't matter if it’s been out for a while, probably pick up a second hand copy cheap

Wolfenstein New Order and Old Blood might both be worth a punt. Pretty cheap second-hand too.

Not sure about recent COD games as I got bored of them after Black Ops.

Single player is good on Metro 2033 and on the newer Metro Last Light both available for the 360.

All CoD games from Modern Warfare through to Black Ops III were released for the 360, which is 9 games by my count. I've played through them all and in my humble opinion, they're all good with not much between them (many would disagree). I think Modern Warfare was the campaign high point for a lot of people so that's probably as good a place to start as any. If you enjoy it, you can follow it up with MW2.

The downside with CoD games is that they're built first and foremost as a multiplayer game so the campaigns are quite short (around 8 hours iirc), which might leave you wondering where your money went.

The other games to look at would be Halo 1/2/3 and the Gears of War games. Both have great campaigns with strong storylines.

That was what I was worried about which is why I asked.

Will look at Halo, Amazon has the first game for £5

Watch Dogs has a very strong campaign mode and is a bit more than a shoot 'em up!

The original Halo is very dated now.
I enjoyed Halo 3 and Halo: Reach on the 360. Haven't played the newer ones.

If you want a bit more than run and gun, bioshock infinite is excellent.

I'm a big fan of the early COD franchise but as mentioned above, the campaign modes are not that long. They're designed with the online games in mind. I've not played a campaign since MW3 when I really got into the online modes. Saying that, there hasn't been a good COD since Ghosts (which didn't review well although I like it).

Spec OPs is third person isn't it? I might be getting it confused.

OP, for run & gun (i.e. no skill development trees etc) you can't get much better than the new Wolfenstein games and they should be cheap to pick up now. Also look at Metro (as mentioned), Left 4 Dead, and the old Battlefield: Bad Company games. If you are ok with the whole skill-up side of things, the new DOOM, Far Cry and Deus Ex are pretty solid (although the latter pushes stealth on you more than shooting).

Call of duty 2, 3, 4 (Modern warfare) and MW2 are fantastic. Never played them online, story mode was great, haven't owned a COD since because this switched, it's all about online now

I've also spent hours playing Halo campaigns, so much fun squashing aliens on easy/normal and a real challenge on legendary. Great fun in splitscreen multi player.

Yes, it's the best military shooter I've ever played though. Properly tactical squad based combat and an amazing storyline.

I may have to dig out my 360 and have another playthrough.

I hadn't noticed if anyone had suggested this but Far Cry 3 was far and away the best FPS I played on last gen.
