Not sure if it goes in here... Body modification kits?
Discussion
Hey,
So I've seen some replica car videos (basically a car that gets the body taken off and a fake one put on top) but that got me thinking of the possibility of getting one custom made?
I'm a graphic designer, passionate about my own creations, and since a kid I've always loved cars. Now I never thought it'd be possible to create my own car, with my own engine and others, but now I've began thinking about it more properly.
Would anyone know what the legislation here in the UK is for customising your car's body (I want to redo exterior and interior, possibly tune the engine and others)?
It's an expensive project, far too much for me to handle (time-wise). My plan would be to hire someone to construct the interior and exterior, leaving the frame.
The car I was thinking for this was maybe the Audi A5 or A6, a big car with 5 seats. Comfortable, luxurious, modern looking. But I'd then like to modify the exterior to a more sports Look, of my own design.
I'd design the whole interior and exterior with sketch drawings, measurements and 3D models, a proper mock up, and then hire someone to build it for me, as that is not where my skill lies.
I thought the Bugatti Chiron has a nice look to it, so does the Ferrari P4 330, so my plan was to kind-of mix the whole thing and create a super beast.
I'm expecting to use good materials that are not too expensive (I thought fiberglass but apparently it's very easy to break). I need it to be safe too, so most of the features of the original car shouldn't be lost.
It's more about looks, engine performance and comfort.
So, how much would I be looking to spend (I'm thinking around 50-100K)?
Take in consideration most parts would be custom built by someone using the materials provided. And also, would this be possible law-wise?
Thank you

^^^ That was also my first thought.
I work in the same field as you and I am resisting the urge to go off on a tangent about the design industry as whole and its complete lack of understanding of the practical ramifications and engineering complexities of some fresh faced "designers" latest bloody brilliant idea but I digress....
Start off by googling "Monocoque" and "Body-on-frame" and decide again whether a modern Audi is necessarily the best car to use as a base for such a project and when you've read all of that have a look in the readers cars section on here and find a thread called "Scratch built car" to get an idea of the sort of work involved.
Don't let that put you off though, car modifying is great and once you decide what you want to achieve you'll learn a lot on here/youtube etc.

OK. People have misunderstood me...
As I said, I do not know much about modifying a car's body, and hence why I came to this forum to ask for help.
I wonder - what car would fit my needs? I want something comfortable, yet modern, and also powerful, but also easy to remove all the outside metal, interior seats and customise everything.
What car should I go for, if I wish to modify the exterior? I've been suggested a BMW Z3 in the past, yet this car is too small for what I desire. When I mention the Audi A5 or A6, is because of their size being exactly the way I want/need it to be.
So, any suggestions?
Thank you

I have googled both. Apparently Audi has a Monocoque frame. Yet, I searched Body-On-Frame, and after some research it appeared to me the best way of modifying a body kit. So, I searched body-on-frame vehicles, but I must say they are mostly SUVs and Trucks.Edited by StoatInACoat on Thursday 17th August 16:17
So I wouldn´t really know what the best car would be for a project like mine?
Dragil, the answers to your questions remain largely unchanged since your previous thread on this topic. There is a reason why 99.999% of the cars you see on the road are fundamentally production cars which were designed, developed and engineered by multi-billion international car makers with long and illustrious histories of car making. It is really hard. All of it. You need to have a lot of time, money and talent to achieve anything of any quality yourself. If you don’t have the time, talent or inclination to do it yourself you are going to need hundreds of thousands of pounds to pay somebody else to do it. The only people who have this kind of money to throw around are multi-millionaires.
Do you know what is meant by a blank cheque?
We all have pipe dreams but most of us non-millionaires suffice on production cars- buying a car we like, and perhaps making some small cosmetic or performance modifications to personalise it.
Your first objective OP must be to pass your driving test if you have not done so already and save up for your first car?

Ultra expensive sports car look based on a crappy fwd Audi platform. Thanks op, I needed a huge laugh at something.
Sorry, either you must be dumb, or you have not read my replies.
I just want a simple answer, but I can see these forums are not intelligent enough to give me one. I'd love to understand which car is the best for what I need, yet no one, but no one is capable of telling me. They have no car in mind, or maybe they just think it's impossible.
I've seen the frame of the Audi A5 and let me say I could very well work with it, whilst maintaining the original frame intact. But it doesn't matter... I'll find someone who can help me.
Thank you all for the "help" you provided.
Absolutely unreal to be honest...
I think it is a little bit like HHGTTG. In order to understand the answer, you need to know what the actual question is.
Your enthusiasm is great and I am sure you could come up with good ideas. However, what everyone is trying to tell you is that you need to walk before you can run.
My suggestion is that you take a basic car of the size you want and then build a new interior, followed by body mods. If you still want to emulate our continental friend afterwards, then fine because at least you will know what the ultimate question actually is. ;-)
What you need to be aware of though is the rules from DVLA and Construction and Use. In a nutshell, you are not permitted to chop a monocoque body about, nor modify a chassis on a seperate bodied car without very close scrutineering by official bodies when complete. Hence the advice to walk first, to find your feet.

Thank you. A good reply that actually helped. Most people here just don't give me clear answers... Thank you, honestly. I understand what you mean. I'll be looking into it more in-depth and see what I can do... Thanks for not being an as%h#le like some people here.Your enthusiasm is great and I am sure you could come up with good ideas. You want a simple answer to a very complicated question that you haven't even though out yet. If this is the way you handle negativity and criticism I don't hold out much hope for your project.
You've got some growing up to do. You can start by doing your homework.

Have you?Actually seen the "Frame" of an Audi A5, a monocoque car that does not have a "Frame"?
