The BBC has produced this video to ask if it is ever acceptable to use black colour emojis, or gifs and memes featuring black people.
The use of black people in memes and suchlike has been branded 'Digital Blackface'.

Anyone else trying to place the accent of the reporter? The BBC has produced this video to ask if it is ever acceptable to use black colour emojis, or gifs and memes featuring black people.

It sounded more against than asking balanced question
What a load of s
t. Seeing racism where there is none.
The gifs are just because they exist. They didn't search for "black person eating popcorn"; they searched for "eating popcorn".
I've had my fair share of racism hurled at me in the 70s and 80s before you ask.
Edit: and 2016/17. #brexit

Accent is like something out of Made in Chelsea! She'd fit right in!
I use a gif because it conveys what I'm thinking, not for any other reason.
If it was someone with a look of surprise I would use it regardless of race.
Had a mini debate about this with my housemates last night, very short one though as we all thought she was incorrect. We don't understand though as we are just white middle class people. .

Totally correct, I use a gif because it conveys what I'm thinking, not for any other reason.

If anything it could be perceived as a form of flattery, I agree that many of the GIFs, emojis used may be black but that's because there isn't a popular white alternative.
questioning white people using black emoji?
Does that go for all black people too?
She's creating barriers rather than breaking them down, racism only exists because of people who point out that persons of different colours should or shouldn't do certain things.
Just ignore the persons colour as it has absolutely no physical affect on a given situation.
She doesn't ask for it to stop, she literally says that she's not saying you can never use memes with black people in them. She is, instead, asking you to question why you're using that one in particular.
I think the point around memes is a bit weak. I think there's possibly something in it if white people are overusing memes featuring black people because on a subconscious level they find black people to be more amusing or less serious but overall I'm not sure that's really the case.
When it comes to emojis though, I think she's got a point. If you're a white person using a thumbs up emoji, why would you make the conscious decision to change it to black? What is the possible motivation behind that?

I'm struggling with this one... There are hundreds of thousands of memes around and I can't believe the majority are of black people.
I wouldn't use a black emoji though as generally when you use an emoji you're referring to action you might make yourself and I'm not black. I'd find it bizarre if a white person used a black emoji however I wouldn't class them as racist unless they were using it in a derogatory manner.

Because it's there, because it's one the person wishes to use, because there's no racial motivation behind the majority of times it's used!I think the point around memes is a bit weak.
