Hi Guys and Girls

Im considering treating myself to a nice watch and have been looking at both the above brands anongst others but these two stick out to me for some reason.

Im after some advice on which you would recommend if either, any possible alternatives i may have overlooked.

I have around 2k to spend so not a massive budget but id like something that will be an investment and not lose much money.

Any thoughts or comments welcomed

Thanks

Steve

Both well made and both have Kudos but should you be flipping it nine months down the line, then it as to be Tudor.

I have an Oris and i do like it, not sure i would splunk £2k on one though!

Tudor all the way for me, or standard answer here, look into secondhand pieces.

Bought a Tudor Black Bay for my son for his 18th.

I've got a couple of Rolex, and while I wouldn't swap, I would say that I am hugely impressed given the relative price.

Lovely, lovely bit of kit.

I would go for whichever you prefer and fits, simple as that. Chances are the movement will be much the same ETA/Valjoux across either unless you get further up the Tudor food chain (think there's only a couple of Tudors now on an in-house unit), and there's nowt wrong with Oris' case execution in my experience. Tudor is trendy right now but Oris is solid enough

Previous responses have already covered it.

Tudor will be probably lose the least though this will will depend on which model you buy. The Black Bay and Pelagos ranges will be the best bet, though you really shouldn't be using the term "investment" in the financial sense. Buy the watch you like the most and forget about the financial side of it, you want to be able to enjoy wearing it and purchasing a watch that you know is 2nd best in aesthetic and/or practical appeal will be a watch that ultimately you'll regret buying. You could also catch something very tasty indeed pre-owned for £2k and that may have already gone through the steepest part of the depreciation curve as well.

Thanks for the replies guys

You mention something "very tasty" secondhand for my budget, could you elaborate on some examples??

My ultimate goal is to get to an IWC At some point in the next 3-5 years so this is a stepping stone really.

Thanks again

What about a Tudor Black Bay in Bronze?? I have a Blue Black Bay and a bronze one that I have not worn yet, I am saving the pleasure for some reason unknown to me yet, but it is very nice.

As boring as it may be the best way to ise this as a stepping stone would be to keep the money in the bank and keep saving towards the IWC. Im making an assumption that this is a significant purchase for you and you could quite easily see your £2000 reduced to £1000 or even less of buying a new watch to sell in a few years time. Even buying secondhand if your buying off of a reputable dealer they will want £200 ish profit on buying and £300 for selling (higher as will probably service and polish) so a quarter of value gone in two years.

It may be not want you want hear but you should think about it.

The other option open to you would be to use the £2000 as a deposit and get the IWC on 0% finance if you can find anyone offering this.

Hi yes it is a significant purchase but im happy to buy and keep also and look at the IWC a few years down the line.

I do like the black bay in almost all colour/strap combinations.

I also love the Tudor Grand Tour and have found one secondhand for £1650.00 which im very tempted by.

Could you recommend a reputable secondhand dealer to look at, ive been on watch finder so far but some of the aecondhand watches look a bit rough round the edges in some of the photos.

Dominic Hackett, resident of this parish and owner of Hackett watches.
Be advised that whilst Dom is a thoroughly good guy he should come with a wealth warning! biggrin

As above hackett watches, i have bought from watchfinder and had no issues i think their photos are generally before they polish them, watches.co.uk are also good and have bought two or three from them without issue.

I've got two Oris watches.

A TT3 & a Chronoris, both lovely pieces.

I've recently bought a blue titanium Tudor Pelagos. It feels in a different league.

I have 2 modern Tudors (2014 and 2017) and an Oris from 2004. For £2K I think a modern Tudor bought from somewhere like Chrono24 (or as mentioned above Dom Hackett) would provide you with the best residual if you're planning a step up to an IWC

An alternative might be an Omega Seamaster which if bought right (£1500 or so) might give you zero depreciation if you trade in a few years.

I bought an Oris TT1 Worldtimer as my first 'proper watch' in late 2008, and I have to say that I think it's great

Solid thing, reliable, and not an obvious copy of a sub or similar. Cost me around £700 I think, which IMO represent's very good value. In fact I'm wearing it as I type this. Oris don't seem to retain a large proportion of their value, which means that they probably represent even better value second hand. Totally recommend an Oris, superb watches, especially for the money, and I wouldn't mind another - perhaps in titanium.

I have to admit, that whilst I haven't actually handled a Tudor, I just don't get what all the fuss is about, but appreciate that they are flavour of the month currently and different things appeal to different people (which is great). I've looked at them through jewelers windows and on line, but just see them as living in the shadow of, and as a cheap copy of, Rolex watches. Perhaps I'm totally wrong and need to have a closer look.

IMO 2k is perhaps a difficult budget, maybe a little too much for a 'cheap' watch that you're hoping to move on quickly, but not enough for the next step up. That said, it is bang on for a second hand Omega Seamaster 300 - which is where I would be looking if I were you.

Watchfinder have some good watches and are easy to buy from, and I think fairly competitive and open to offers. Plus you can go and have a look at the watches before you buy. There are loads of decent jewelers about that can help you out. This is probably PH sacrilege, but I didn't find Dom very helpful - I emailed him asking him to source a WG or RG Daytona on the basis of all the praise on these forums, and whilst I received a very pleasant email back he didn't follow up and I bought elsewhere.

looks like you have similar tastes to me.

always like oris but as above, the logic would be to wait a bit longer and get the IWC. or go with some interest free deal that most offer.

I really like the Milgauss from Rolex and am currently planning to get one in the next year or so, unless I can find a decent Blancpain on offer

Once again thanks for all the info, ive been doing a lot of looking about and ive fallen in love with Junghans watches as well as the Alpina.

I know that some of the cheaper Alpina are quartz movements but is there anything to look out for on either of the above, i have to say i think i may plunge for a Junghans either way as ive stumbled across them and they hit me instantly from a looks point of view, i just want to make sure im not going to regret it.
