Ok, so the simple answer, get more reliable staff...however the person in question has medical problems which sometimes mean that she cant make it in the morning and is unable to call anyone to let us know. No way of her knowing before hand.

I have a retail shop that is supposed to be opened for 6am, I don't always remember/get the time to phone it just after 6am to check everything is ok so I am after a solution where if it is not open by said time, I am notified.

We do have a security alarm etc but apparently this is not something the alarm company offers, to move companies would cost too much as we are under contract.

The issue obviously is the lost sales and then the lost trust of the companies that when they turn up we will be open as advertised. If I was somehow made aware of the store not being opened on time I could then obviously make arrangements.

Has anyone had similar and found a solution that is not just phoning the shop every morning?

Remote access CCTV?

With a 2 second view on the phone you'd know whether people were in the shop

True and this will possibly be a solution to hook up a internet streaming camera but I was hoping for something that could tell me rather than having to check.

I suppose to be brutally honest, although I am up at that time usually, on the days that I am not, I want to be able to lie in bed and have it tell me and as such wake me up rather than having to wake up just to find out I didn't need to as the place is open.

Maybe not the 'best' solution.... but the 'ring' brand of doorbells offer notification on movement; you could hook that up and set a time of 6am - 6:15am where it notifies you she has arrived in the building... (then it wont bother you for any other movement throughout the day, unless you want it to)

Sort of the opposite of what you want (eg; it'll tell you she's there) - but once you're used to getting them each morning you'll probably realise you've not been notified on a morning she isn't available ?

I'm sure there is a better solution, mind... !

What kind of condition do they have that leaves them so incapacitated that they can't even use the phone or send a text?

I have an Arlo CCTV camera on the front door.

Set it to live mode out of trading hours and say 10 minutes into trading hours it will send you a clip of her opening up. If it doesnt by 6:10 you know she is late!

Better still if she wants to come in at midnight you will be notified too.

Cheap solution and is wireless.

But surely she does know at 6am whether she's going to be opening at 6am or not...?

Just make part of the morning opening procedures - which, I presume, are documented - "text boss on 07xxx to say 'shop open'"

Look at setting up an If This Then That (IFTTT) type task/applet on HER phone. If she is still at home at 6am then it sends you an SMS.

Or maybe an Alexa/Google task, again at her end. Set up a task to SMS/email you at 6am which she has to cancel every morning. Not sure if it's possible, but it's an approach you could investigate.

basically, I forget the name for it as its some long techno sounding thing but its effectively degenerative and is terminal. She has to inject herself at night to slow the progress, but as the medication takes effect it, for some reason, sometimes has a side effect of leaving her dazed and confused when she wakes in the morning.

Getting rid is not an option really as she is a loved member of the small local community, who would then boycott the store...plus she is loved by me too and an inspiration how she still wants to keep going. However, at the same time, it is now effecting the business.

She wants to keep continuing for as long as she can until she is physically unable to, I am happy for her to do this, but as she is progressing, the times this is happening is increasing so I need to try and take steps to sort a solution long term.

Thats not a bad idea, not a complete solution as would rather it worked the other way round but could be the best solution for now.

How about some kind of automatic system that is set to call you at 6.05 unless she switches it off?

Hmm, thats a good idea, would have to do it for each day she is due to start work but other than that it could be the best solution. Maybe, hypothetically, some sort of shared calender/to-do list where if she has not ticked it as done by 6am it sets an alert on my phone which would be the reminder to do the task, but would actually just alert me that she has not ticked it to say is up and about...

I'm certain there are devices for monitoring vulnerable people where they may have had a fall etc. Something like a plug adapter that sends an alert if a kettle, TV etc has not been switched on by a set time.

I think you've already given a verbal warning re not opening the shop on time - next stage is a written warning.

It's time to start looking towards the future of the business with a member of staff who is obviously going to have to retire at some stage soon. Maybe introduce the replacement in the form of an apprentice for her to train up and show the ropes etc. The apprentice can slowly take over the early shift taking the load off the senior member of staff which would assist for the mornings that she is unable to open on time. The apprentice route will place less of a financial strain on the business and possibly give the senior member of staff less of a sense of being pushed out due to the junior nature of an apprentice.

Why is everyone trying to solve a problem the OP hasn't asked for help with? If he wanted answers as to how to manage the employee out he would have asked for that. He knows all this st & is just trying to keep this poor dying woman in a a job for a while longer.

He's asked for help with a specific issue: how he can be notified if she doesn't get to work. For fks sake concentrate on how he might use any available technology to do that.

It's just like the idiots whose answer to a Windows problem is always "install Linux".

Listen to the user's problem & try & solve it.

Simple. She texts him if/when she HAS.
