Caterham under bonnet part identification.

Could someone confirm what the part below does?:



It is connected to the front brake hoses. There should be 2 wires connected to it, but the red wire on mine has clearly snapped from the connector (I have removed the connector). The red wire traces back to under the dashboard but I cannot follow it to the end. I will strip the wire and reconnect it, but I'm just curious as to what it does. I recall that it is not the only wire under the bonnet that does not terminate, there is another one with a plug on it that has no socket nearby. Everything works as it should, or as far as I am aware!

Brake pressure sensor? Has the car been raced, had datalogging on it?

Or a brake failure switch or even the brake light switch? Are your brake lights working?

I wondered if it was a hydraulic brake light switch but on my '93 car that switch is on the brake union near the pedal box. I thought in newer cars
(OP's profile mentions 1.6 Superlight) they all used the brake light switch operated directly by the brake pedal.

You will only know by tracking back what the wires connect to, I reckon.

Well, I thought the brake lights were working, especially since the MOT last week checked all lights including the brake lights. Now I have my doubts. Checking on Google confirms you are right - the connector with two contacts is a hydraulic brake light switch. I expected brake lights to be a connection from the actuation of the brake pedal. When I get back this weekend I can check the brake lights. Another post suggested the brake warning switch, but I understand this connects to the fluid reservoir. Thanks. (It is a 2002 1.6 Superlight)

Are you sure it's definitely connected to the brake circuit? It looks very much like a low pressure oil warning switch, the braided hose would be connected to the oil filter head just round the front of the engine, the wire that is still in place is probably the earth and the red would lead to a light on the dash?
