The first air quality legislation for London (to take one example) was enacted in 1306. The Clean Air Act was enacted in 1956 after around 12,000 people died in the great smog of 1952. Seen any smog recently?

Catalytic converters were pretty much compulsory from 1975 in the US, and from 1961 PCV was pretty much compulsory too (research at the time calculated that 50% of smog emissions from cars were crankcase ventilation).

It's nonsense to say nobody cares, or that it's a recent problem, or that it's all going to pot.
