Mark,

So you like the look of the Cerbie? Undecided about an M3 or a boxster s? like the sound of that flat plane crank?

Credentials = 2 years ownership
Reason for buying = I became a small boy looking at a naked Pam Anderson every time I saw the car
Reason for loving = nothing drives as well in the world!
Reason for selling =Too light weight, too fiddly to setup RIGHT & BIG bills
Moved onto = Boxster S
Reason for sale = no more extended excuses about TVR's being special. Only petrol bills.
Why am I posting = TVR need to sort this out

So is 2 years I did 15k miles. Each time it needed help Brian at Furnhursts was the first to be called. no expense was spared.

So what can the new Cerbie own look forward to....

Old style clutch fail - the fingers break rendering gear selection useless. Normally covered under warranty (£1500 if no warranty)

Clutch Master Cyl. Fails £350 to fix

Air con always fails - system looses pressure, finding the leek not impossible, bill around £500.

Shocks - standard units will fail. If they leak this can be sorted under warranty. If not £1000 bill. Massive improvement to road holding

Diff plat - poor design means the diff normally secured to the chassis breaks free. You'll recognize this by a banging when you change gear from the rear. A repair is £450 because this is a poor design it WILL fail again. HINT: if you drive smoothly i.e. disengage gear, pause, engage next gear, engage clutch, and apply power slowly this will extend the life. Drive like a motorcycle or race car and expect failure in 4000 miles (£450 bill) do nothing as I did and he prop shaft CV joint will fail. (£1000)

Spider wheels - these are light weight and coupled with very low profile tires (35 sections) will distort overtime because of pothole hits - Yes it WILL happen. £150 each to replace. no MOT failure but your steering will vibrate if you don't.

Toyo tires last 3000 miles - check the INSIDE tread the wheels are canted in at the top for feel. This wears the inside tread - MOT failure.

Rear breaks squeal - only solution is to skim the disk, not expensive £150/wheel but eats away at your AP racing disk which is £800 to replace each. Starts around 40k miles. Caused by an annealed skin on the disk surface - so my friend in Mcclarren tells me.

Powder coating - comes off frame after 5 years or so. Can be treated by dealer for £1200. If left untouched after another 5 years expect a car in 3 parts.....

Throttle bodies - Very Very Very hard to set up. The engine is handled by the ECU as 2 4 cyl. Engines. Both need to be balanced. The position of the throttle determine the mixture setting for each 4 Cyl half of the engine. The position of the throttle is fed back by 2 sensors - one for each half of the V8. Net result is lots and lots of time getting it right. The sensors are crap to start with. Either the car will pull well to 5k and not after or some other variation but higher up the revs. i.e. no low down grunt but pulls like a train to 6k.
The only way to sort this is a rolling road AND a TVR dealer mechanic with the laptop.
NOTE:- Invest here these are light powerful cars, so they feel very fast EVEN with faults - get it sorted :-)

The join between the rear roof and the rear wings will show a small white line (crack) in time this is caused by movement between the roof and body - new shocks make this worse - this is a feature of ownership.

Air filter clogs up quickly – clean it monthly.

Servicing – If you’re in the south call Fernhurst speak to Brian. They are ½ the price per hour of everyone else and they DO care about customer satisfaction. They also care about your TVR so will tell you the truth – be prepared..

So let’s talk adult…. Let’s talk TCO (total cost of ownership) Cebera vers Boxster S

Cerbera depreciation £4-5k per year (almost irrespective of year)
Warrant per year £800
Servicing per year £800
OMG’s (Oh my gods) Per year £3000
Tires £800 (6k miles toyo)

Total £10,400

Porsche Boxster S
Depreciation £4-5k per year (almost irrespective of year)
Warrant per year £0
Servicing per year £800
OMG’s (Oh my gods) Per year £0
Tires £800 (6k miles toyo)

Total £5,600

NOTE cost of car loads the same.

Conclusion

Driving a TVR cerbera cost you twice as much per year than a Boxster S. Yes it’s faster; more adjile, stops better (just), looks way cooler, and sounds better. BUT a Boxster has no roof, a Bose 300W stereo, vague steering and suspension, but all it costs in petrol.

Morale of the story – Buy a Cerbera use it often enjoy it but expect it to cost £1000 a month all in. If this is affordable you deserve each other if not THINK about the option. We all want to F**k pammy but one you have do you really want to take her out long term?

If I wanted something anodyne, I wouldn't have sold the wife's Audi. Gimme SOUL baby....

Oh, and clearly Porsche drivers have a distinct dearth of morale [sic].....

what "OMG's" did you have with your £800 warrantee??

and 3000miles for tyres?? I know a fair few owners who REALLY take the once their cars are nice and warm (good on them for enjoying their cars to the full, diagonally..) who go through rear tyres less frequently like that.

What a strange post, + do you want someone to call you and let you hear their Cerb down the phone or something??? There are some dodgy people on the net, you seem to have just given them a phone number???

Strange post!

£450 for a diff mount!
As said before, wherever you're work was done, they must have had big windows, because they definately seen you coming!

To own a Cerb you need to accept that minor things will go wrong, but hey its worth it!!
I'd put up with a few glitches now and then anyday of the week for the driving enjoyment to be had from a cerb.
Driving a boxter is no more fun than driving a reasonably quick hot hatch or something along those lines.
No matter how reliable it is, it is in a completely differant league to any TVR!

I think this rates as the daftest post I've ever seen on this forum. Master of the blatantly obvious it could be used to argue for any car other than a TVR.

I think in retrospect it says more about the poster than the car.

Sorry, the only bit of that post I can agree with regards Brian and Fernhurst, the rest seems mostly fiction.

look, im sorry. im as red blooded as the next bloke (unless its C Montogemery Burns or Prince Charles) but im just not seeing the link between your Car Vs Car theory and Pamela Anderson. i want to think about her at any given oppurtunity, but like my car, these two bits seem a bit, well, nailed together. whats your point?

or, are you mentioning her in the same breath as TVR cos you know nothing of either of them? if so, it scans perfectly.

either way, thanks for making me feel both horny and less like a tosser.

Or maybe some semi aquatic mammal with webbed feet and a strange duck like mouth that frequents the southern hemisphere?

That post has just reminded me of a conversation i had with a girl the other week after she'd been dumped, well i use the term 'conversation' loosely as it took the form of listening to a series of excuses and defensive statements all said with an undercurrent of bitterness prior to seeing her run into the pub toilets crying.
