Okay, AMG celebrating an anniversary and PH posting an article about some rather nice examples, made me hit the classifieds (again). I found something I've never heard of, and I can't find much information about, the W124 300E AMG 3.4. Does anybody have experience with one? Or can someone just tell me something more about the cars? And what would one be worth? As I can't find any for sale, it's obviously difficult to compare...

A really rare car from the pre-merger AMG days if it's legit! Although badged 3.4, it's actually a 3.3. They took the standard lump, overbored the cylinders by 3mm and then added the crankshaft from the M603 engine to also increase the stroke. They also fettled the cylinder head and added bespoke AMG camshafts to give an output of around 270hp. There were a few with a manual box too!

I've never seen one in the metal, which in my mind at least makes it rarer than the "Hammer", E36 and 500E variants.

See also 45: the Story, the Cars at page 195. It appears that the correct designation is 300 E-24 3.4, the motor having the 24-valve cylinder head. Not that fast: 0-100km/h in about 7.4seconds. Quite a special car; very small production numbers, I'd be amazed if more than one or two made it to these shores.

Another purchase following your mention of a book I had never heard of - on a kg per £ basis it's a bargain, and from a quick flick through highly recommended.
