Hi all -

I've a Golf R 2014, it's due it's first service under my ownership, I'm just wondering which one to go for?

Yearly

I probably do between 8-10k per year,

Thanks in advance!

Do you have the full service History?

Assuming you do, just follow what's recommended as i'm sure their will be a sequence depending on age/mileage.

Hi - thanks for the reply, the car does have a FSH but there is no recommendation on what to do?

^^^^^ this.

As it's a 2014, a brake fluid change will be due. First is at 3 years and then every 2 years thereafter.

Whichever one the car is requesting

If it's set to 10k-/12months do that if it's set to long life have that service

Or, maybe look in the service book.

It's telling me it needs a service, it doesn't suggest which one, hence me asking for some guidance!

Just go for the annual service as that suits your mileage and have them reset the service counter to Time and Distance regime.

You can tell what regime it's on by referring back to when the last service was done. If it was approx 12 months or 10k miles ago then it's on Time and Distance. If it's any longer then it's probably longlife.

The first major service for your car is really at 4 years when the Haldex and DSG (if DSG) gets serviced. Other than that it's just oil changes and the odd pollen filter change.

I don't know how VAG manage to make servicing seem so complicated when in fact it's very simple.

It's not you, it's them and even their service people struggle to understand it.

Look in the book for previous services

If it's been done annually, then do that

If it's been done on longlife either do that or ask the dealer to switch to annual

I'm really struggling to see what the difficulty is.

The service book should tell you what regime was set up when new

There is no difficulty, it was just a question asking for some guidance.

I called the dealer and was offered three different services, the car has been on an annual service regime looking at the service history but wondered whether going for one of the other services was an option.

It's particularly complicated as VW tries to keep servicing to a minimum on new cars as they're generally on fixed interval VW service plans if bought by retail customers and variable (longlife) servicing if on lease.

On fixed interval the cars don't have much done until 4yrs old. Then VW suddenly decrees that they need alternate minor and major services.

I speak S3 rather than Golf R but they're mechanically identical so try these:

Every 12mths/10k: oil change (aka interim service)

Every 24mths/20k: oil & inspection (aka inspection service, normally includes pollen filter)

Every 40k: oil & inspection +plugs +air filter

Additions:

Every 3 years: Haldex (rear diff) oil

First at 3 years then every 2: Brake fluid change

Every 40k (DSG only) gearbox oil.

I think that's all the obvious stuff covered.

It is the same for VW. Does Audi continue with the same regime as the car gets older?

As I said above, on fixed interval servicing the interim/inspection stuff gets dropped at 4yrs (or 40K miles) and a Major service is done as VW switches to alternating major and minor services. Except the plugs stay at every 4yrs - but VW doesn't charge any different on its fixed price whether they change them or not. We use an indie now and he follows the same schedule although he didn't charge for the plugs at the cars major service at 6yrs old (labour cost of the service was the same though).

Is the Haldex oil a time based change?

When I had an A3 I was told it was 40k, same as the DSG oil...

Yes, 3 years for Haldex oil (not 100% sure when this changes).

S-Tronic/DSG oil was 40k (6 speed) but appears to be 80k for the 7 speed cars. Didn't know this, only saw it when I looked at one on Erwin just now.

When I had my MK5 R32 with the Gen 2 Haldex, it was 40k miles. Surprised it's every 3 years now.

The whole alternating minor and major service after 3 years at VW really is a con in my opinion. I just get the minor service each year and then get them to change the other stuff based on Time / Mileage. If I'm paying for the major service I want all the filters changed whether they are due or not.
