Maybe something simple like breakdown with identification of its flight plan or route

It was a loss of comms. I've really no idea why in the BBC article Jet2 were acting like they didn't know and wanted clarification, presumably to try and save face.

Was thinking it would be something simple since it was not all over the media.

I think everyone would be surprised as how often it does happen.... I heard that often fighters would "just shadow" an Airliner during a regular sortie as practice, but that was back in the late 90s so things may have changed now.
