Discussion
I have had 2 981 CGTS's before and they were amazing. I am hoping to get a new 718 Spyder in around 18 months and wondering what car I should get to fill the gap. I am fancying a convertible, hence the Spyder. In the meantime I am torn between a 718 BGTS and a 911 GTS (Coupe with the Bigger Sunroof - not quite convertible but close enough). Either car will be only for the 18 month wait, and am tempted by the 911 more by the engine than by the need for the 2+2 - I guess that was the point of the move to a flat 4 in the 718.
I know both will be awesome to drive, and I guess I am trying to decide which is the best option as a gap filler - 718 Boxsters currently seem to lose a lot second hand, whereas the 911 seems bullet proof so thinking the 911 is the better financial decision.
I have considered a second hand 981 Spyder or a 981 BGTS (again based on the engine and my love of the CGTS I had) but struggling to find any with a spec I can compromise on given their prices are still at or above list.
Thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks

If you are tempted by the engine in the 911 then that is your decision made as you will always wonder "what if" if you chose the 718. I am in the same position as you. I have had an LOI in for 718 Spyder since Jan 2016 and have placed a deposit on a 718GTS in the meantime as I have had my current 987 Spyder for 7 1/2 years and I want a change. Having owned 2 911's in the past (911 Speedster in the early 90;s and a 996 Turbo) I have scratched that particular itch and quite frankly I could not justify the additional premum for a 911 any more. The performance difference is now so small (depending upon model of course!) and interior wise they are almost identical from the driving seat (no need for rear seats in my case) and I quite like the sound of the flat 4 Turbo - different from flat 6 but no worse/better to my old (!) ears. ANyway a nice decison to have to make I think !
Having had s 991 GTS i can confirm that they are superb cars and the engine is masterpiece with the power kit. Its a quick car and the howl you get is proper 911. Prices will I should think stay very firm and possibly even start to appreciate soon due to it being the last of the N/A 911, GT3 aside which is said to be possibly the last ever N/A GT3.
As AV said above, the GT4 (of which i own) should be considered as it's one of the best Porsche road cars ever made along with the Spyder which although doesn't have the GT3 front end like a GT4, is very much liked by all who own one. The Spyder is also the rarer by quite some margin but imo and if it was me, I would have to have the light weight bucket seats. Spyders seem to be very spec sensitive when it comes to resale. Lots were spec'd with 18 ways seats and folding buckets. I'd have mine in GT silver too.
Nice decision to have bit for me the high revving 6 pots are a totally different experience to the low down torquey 4 pot turbos of which I am not a fan. If you want a road driving experience go GT4, If you want residual, I'd go 991 GTS but make sure its for the GTS interior pack and centre lock wheels plus Bose and even thought I'm not a fan, the pano sunroof does seem to help resale. If you can find one with folding buckets even better.

Thanks for the advice, all makes sense - I guess you are referring to a 911.1 GTS as you reference the N/A aspect of it? They are stunning cars as well. As you say it's a nice decision to make and all of them will be great cars. The GT4 is a car I have considered, but they seem to be dropping quite a bit at the moment so maybe the wrong time to jump in. My OPC told me yesterday they have a 981 Spyder coming in in a few weeks - not sure of the spec though yet but something to consider. Thanks for your thoughts - what is making you switch the 987 Spyder against a GTS - just wanting a newer car? I had looked at a 987 Spyder as an option as well, but I am a more modern car guy and prefer the interior of the 981 / 911. I have read the 987 drives better, but I am no racing driver so think I would prefer to see the modern interior and my skills will still be no match for a 981 / 911.Kazandy37 said:

Hi Kazandy - yes I just want a change as I have never kept a car for so long. Part of me says that I am mad changing out an exclusive model for something more run of the mill but like you I am a modern car sort of guy and I want the new technology. I had planned to change to 981 Spyder when it was launched but I really like the PDK box so the lack of that option precluded it for me. Like you (I think!) have commented elsewhere I also "fear" the the 718 Spyder will see a significant price hike and I do not have unlimited budget !Kazandy37 said:

Yes sorry 991.1 GTS. The 991.2 is apparently an awesome car but I'm not fan of turbos so I'm not the right person to talk to about those. The .1 will be better at the moment in terms of residual as they .2 is so new. There will be discounts to be had on them though I reckon as some OPC's have 3 to 4 i the showrooms sitting unsold. Very much the same situation as with the .1 about 3 years ago where they were being offered with sizeable discounts from new.The GT4 has softened but I just think that generally the 6 pots will all remain strong going forward and especially the last of the line cars such as the GT4 and Spyder plus C&B GTS'. You're not going to lose your shift with any one them.
