Just mulling some things ovee. I have currently got a Lotus Elise 111R which I have put up for sale. It is a good fun car but I have had it over 2 years now and i fancy a change.

It will be a second car for early morning "hoons" and i would use it for weekends away with the mrs(She isn't a fan of the elise and not been in it many times)

I was thinking about a 911 as they seam to do everything well. But i do like to have something a little different and there are quite a few about. Reading about the issues with the engines doesn't help much either.

Then with alot of man maths i am thinking i might be able to get an Audi R8. Relativley rare and it is a V8!
Running costs don't look to be to bad, i have read mag ride suspenion is exoensive to replace though.

Car will only doing roughly 5k a year so mpg not a problem.

Looking at £40k ish although i have seen a few nice R8's a little more than that . Saving up now and looking to buy around April time next year.

Just after opinions really from owners.

Thanks

Patrick Bateman

I'm not an owner but it'd be the R8 for me easily.

At 40k aren't you looking at 997.2 which avoids the engine issues.

I'd be tempted by the R8 feels more special, have always liked them, but there's still a chance of big bills and at 40k they tend to have had a few owners so buy carefully.

Out of those 2, definitely the R8 as whilst the Porsche is a very good car for everyday use, it's not special or raw enough to make you want to get up and go for a drive.

Evora (better for the wife) or Exige S would be where my money would go.

another vote for the R8. A number of V8s don't have the mag suspension so you can avoid that potential issue. Compared to a 911 a bit more special and V8 + engine size should always be preferred

As much as I love Porsches, I think I'd have a manual V8 R8 over a 911, and possibly even a 4.7 AMV8.

But I'd probably have a Peridot Green Cayman R cloud9

Hmmm, bit of an echo in here! Briefly had a V10 Plus, and if the chance ever arises again, I'll have another in a heartbeat. Feels like an event to drive it.

R8. 911s do indeed do "everything well" - but in my opinion lack character a bit as a result, and don't really do anything exceptionally. The modern ones are just not exciting to drive.

Also, I doubt a £40k R8 will drop in value much more? A £40k 997 definitely will.

R8 no question 911 carrera pretty bland in comparison, have a V10+ and its a wonderful thing...

Not sure either will be as focused or fun as the Elise. Personally if I were you, I would look at something like an RPM Technik CSR car.

Thanks for tge replys everyone. My Elise is good, i used to love it i just think i have got bored with it and fancy a change.

My thinking is if i don't like the R8 (my mind is made up if i can save up/ justify it!) i can always sell it and get a Lotus 220 Cup or a Caterham
