There was a Soviet 'Foxtrot' class diesel electric boat moored at Strood.

Yup, still there.

You can see it from the train crossing as you go through from Rochester to Strood. it has been listing fairly badly to port for a few years now.

It was featured in the deeply dreadful film 'Black Sea' a few years ago.

also HMS Ocelot at chatham dockyard. Medway is like a magnet for submarines for some reason...

Yea it's still there although is upright now. It was moved further out into the river to stop vandals getting on it. Think some work was done on it for use as a film set (Jude law film about 3 years ago, can't remember the name).

Well, until the John Nott defence review Chatham was a submarine refit yard, including nuclear Submarines, and constructed many conventional submarines, too.

Yep- they spent years clearing out contaminated soil from the St Mary's island site before they could redevelop it. Several full trains of contaminated soil would leave the site every day for ages. I knew people that bought houses in that area when they were new and they weren't allowed to grow vegetables in their back gardens for a number of years. There's also an odd walled off area near a new Asda store and housing development that has never been touched- supposedly full of Cobalt 60 and Carbon 14 waste if you believe local rumours..

Funnily, enough I was going past on the train today. Looks like they have fixed the bad list that it has developed. But still looking very sorry for itself....
