Hi Guys,

New here but looks like a good place for honest advice. Im looking to change my car within the next few months, I generally know before i go out which car, model and even colour i want which makes buying second hand a little difficult at times as i tend to narrow it down and get set on something. I think i also twist logic at times to justify in my head what i want to do, so am probably not that objective, hence me coming here.

My current car is a 2010 Mondeo, 2.0 Ecoboost with the powershift box, great car but i think if memory serves me right, this is my 6th Mondeo so for now needs to be my last. Im not a fan of the latest shape at all and in particular the interior. Altho i do love the engine/gearbox which i think is very very good.

So anyway back to the title, In the beginning i had my heart set on an Audi 2.0 S Line or the Black edition (ideally the black edition) It has to be an auto as im in essecence, lazy. I reckon i could get a 13 reg, or maybe even 14 at a push with decentish mileage for my money. However my work colleague thinks im a little bit nuts, he basically says the BMW 5 Series M sport is the better and nicer car to have. Now in some ways i actually agree but have had a couple of Audis in the past and always had a soft spot for them.

The more research I do, the more torn i am. I have sat in both and will drive both but a drive doesnt give you a feel of what its like to live with. So heres my twisted logic so far......

The A6 - everyone (i know) says is boring to look at, although i dont mind this i do think it has the nicest interior, by some margin over the 5 Series. The FWD will be better in snow than a BMW, the Quattro even better but will probably mean going for the 3.0 version and getting something a bit older. (Snow can get bad at work in winter and im self employed). Running costs seem reasonable. Which brings me on to the gearbox............. I have read too much on here about the multitronic being a pile of rubbish, general opinion seems to be the later ones are ok for reliability but having read the stories, they seem a little different in how they work to what im used to. Would it drive like my current car (6 Speed dual clutch semi-auto)? Or is it totally different? Am i better off trying to find an S tronic which i believe is similar to mine now?

BMW 5 Series M Sport - Seems to be more choice of engines, no horror stories on gearbox and i feel slightly better looking. I know the RWD gives a better drive and all the reviews says its a nicer car to drive. Although this might cause me issues for the 5 days every 2 years that it snows and i have to abandon it at the side of the road. I do have to say i dont find the interior very nice to look at, it all feels very high quality but seems dull compared to the audi, i know this is personal choice but i guess we spend more time behind the wheel than actually looking at it.

As i say, i will drive both but am not sure a half hour test drive will give me the best indication of what its like to live with. I think the Audi would be easier for servicing as there is an independant near my work. Would the Multitronic gearbox destroy my life?

So come on guys, tell me im an idiot and help me out!

Which would you buy?

Thanks!

The a6 avant is a lovely car through and through.

Id personally go for the 3.0tdi quattro, the 2.0tdi feels a bit sluggish on ours.

In regards to tbe gearbox the 2.0tdi tend to be CVT boxes which arent amazing. Go for the 3.0Tdi, which IIRC comes with an "s tronic" gearbox.

Ive also had the pleasure of having a 530d estate as a courtesy car. Again a very lovely car, and no real downsides to it.

Hi Audi A6s are dull as you like from a handling POV.

5series is where it's at if you want something that steers nicely.

I've had both in the past and currently in an E Class estate which is somewhere between the two in terms of handling. It's not exciting but I love it, and it bloody shifts too.

Personal preference though obviously.

For 17k I'd be looking at an E Class or XF Jag tbh:

XF S 275bhp 8 Speed Portfolio

Leftfield Option:

XJ 3.0d Luxury (with Three years warranty)

Or the XJ 2.2d Portfolio

Out of your two I'd take the BMW decent tyres, turn the traction off & you'll be able to get around.

Having driven plenty of A6's and 5 series I would always pick the A6. I actually prefer the mutitronic to the DSG box, its a smoother gearbox. My preference would be a 3.0 Quattro although there is a multitronic version of that too. The A6 is a great motorway car. Just make sure the gearbox changes smoothly and there are no clunks when selecting gears.

The A6 has a range of tiny and old fashioned feeling infotainment screens and unless you get the BiTurbo, the S5 or the Hybrid none of them come with a decent gearbox.

They are better value than the 5 Series, though.

Thanks for the replies people.

Haven't been able to reply for some reason so don't think I was being rude!

Some interesting thoughts there, some I have had, some I haven't. It does have to be a saloon for me, an estate would be far more practical with the family etc, but I can not get my head round them at all. I spent most my childhood at the side of the road braking down in Ford Cortina estates with my granddad so I reckon this may have done some lasting damage to my mind!

I'm not a fan of Mercedes, not sure why because some of their stuff looks really nice, its like a mental block I have.

Jag XF, Reminds me of a Ford inside for some reason and I don't like the interior

Jag XJ is a bit interesting, may have to look further into that, love the looks and interior looks nicer than the XF, although not sure If I'm a bit "young" for one.

Its nice to see a positive comment on the Audi multitronic for once.

In an ideal world I want the newest lowest mileage I can get for my money, but I think deep down I would like the A6 3.0 S Tronic Quattro. But this is likely to be a bit older and probably cant afford the Black edition.

Yet I cant hep thinking the obvious choice is still the BMW, RWD in snow is rubbish, don't particularly like the interior (but love the armrest/centre console and how high and how it cocoons the driver) the boot is a bad shape compared to the A6, yet I'm still drawn to it.....

Thanks for your advice guys, I'm not normally so undecided, I reckon it will come down to whats available at the time and my mood on the day.

My previous car was a Mondeo tit x 59 plate, lovely car and I would have had another but also didn't like the shape of the new one.

So wanting to move up a class I thought A6/5 series/eclass/xf. I was looking at estates. Xf was discounted as soon as I sat in it. The interior is awful. The e class was excluded also as although a lovely looking car the interior is an abortion and just dull, also looked dated.

The A6 in sline spec is a lovely car, drives great and all in all a great car. However the 5 series m sport is a step above it. Its a lovely drive and I love mine. Its a 520d

My advice is go and sit in all of them and take it from there
