I've got a 2004 Peugeot engine, 2 litre HDi. It's only doing 22 mpg some days and 30 other days.
Recently had new radiator, new MAF sensor and air filter, new injectors and glo plugs, new EGR valve and pipe, new exhaust and last year a total engine refurb. The turbo just been checked and is OK.

It's using oil about half a litre per week, and there's soot and a little oil blowing around the engine compartment when I rev. Also it's not getting the MPG as I said and lacks power from time to time, yet other times it's like a rocket.
Dealer just said today it's head gasket but I don't see any evidence of that like.

Any suggestions?

I'd check vacuum hoses, pcv circuits and breathers/vents for splits or breaks. Also make sure the dipstick and filler cap are secure. Is the coolant level ok and is the coolant normal looking.

You can compression test the engine for head gasket seal if you suspect that.

You paid for all that work on a 13 year old Peugeot ? Why ?

And exactly how long has been consuming huge amounts of oil or driving bad etc ? Before or after this bottomless pit rebuild ?

Coolant is spot on. No loss or discolouration.
Is a compression test easily done at home? What do I need for that?

It's a motorhome so worth a lot. But am wondering if it's time to just put a new engine and box in cos a bit fed up with this thing.
Maybe the last 2 years or so for no apparent reason I know, the mileage has just got erratic.

So you're saying it used huge amounts of all prior to all this work ( ie 2 years ago ) and even now after all that work, it is still using a load of oil ?

That to imply it is not engine related, assuming the work was not done by a bunch of muppets.

ie it could be external plumbing, breather system, etc etc Or maybe as simple as overfilling it and the engine not being happy and ending up consuming the excess again via breathers etc
