Hey all, Thanks in advance first of all.

Currently looking to change car, I have a MK5 GTi which to be honest dont fun it THAT fun and only getting about 28MPG average with V power. Along with the insurance and tax its not stupid money but is a fair bit to run. Wanting to get a s14 in a couple of years as a weekend car (will happily pay the high rates as been wanting an s14 since I cant remember) so I dont have to worry about getting something sensible and losing all fun. But I want to get said sensible car first.
Budget of about 8/9k and found a very nice scirocco TDi 170 DSG. Auto, tick. good power, tick. Low tax, tick. Good MPG, tick. But starting reading into these stories about the cost to own a diesel becoming expensive soon due to increasing tax, cost in certain areas and increase in diesel price.

I do about 8000 miles a year so a little but under the 10000 mile 'own a diesel' mark but my journey to work is a straight road so I can blast out the DPF.
Did think about the Fiesta Ecoboost but looks a bit to boy racer, not as luxurious as the scirocco, not auto and worried about driving a 1.0 litre.
What do people think as mi at a brick wall!?

Thanks

A friend of mine has a Scirocco 2.0 TDi DSG, and she absolutely loves it.

Plenty of grunt, decent fuel economy, and feels "newer" than the MkV Golf platform it's based on (she had a MkV Golf previously, and I've owned a MkV GT TDi).

As an added bonus, in the right colour, the Scirocco is a particularly good looking car.

Her lease is coming to an end soon, and despite test driving cars from VW, Audi, BMW and Mercedes, she still thinks she wants another 'Rocco... She's already on her second one! laugh

The 170bhp TDI lump in the Scirocco is a Euro 5 engine. London's T-charge requires a Euro 4 or better engine so there is, currently at least, no reason to worry a great deal about that (assuming other cities that implement it follow similar guidelines).

Most engines now are turbocharged anyway, regardless of fuel type, so the turbo will always be the big ticket item there.

The main issue with diesel is resale values. VW's emissions scandal definately made them take a hit but unless a report comes out saying diesel engines kill millions of children and polar bears every year then there isn't too much to worry about as resale values and depreciation forecasts can be unreliable.

Providing you will do the types of journeys to allow the DPF to regen (you have said you do) and diesel fuel doesn't cost 20% more than petrol then you are going to be saving money on every journey over using an equivalent petrol car.

Given you cover 8000 miles per year I don't see were your savings are coming from. My Leon Cupra used to average 29mpg and over the same trip my A3 2.0 TDi would average 37mpg, if you don't enjoy the GOlf then you won't enjoy a diesel Rocco. Personally I would go for the Fezza, it will handle better, be better on fuel and cheaper to run. You will also get a much newer car. You need to do at least 16k to be in diesel territory

The 170 was a fair bit less reliable than the 140bhp version so I'd probably look for a 140 & map it if it has to be a diesel.

The thing is with your mileage I'd be looking for a petrol such as:

Kia C'eed 4

Clio

Alfa Giulietta

Ford Focus

VW Golf

Astra GTC

All the above will give you the economy you're looking for whilst performing daily duties & no worries about DPF Filters etc as the mileage you do really isn't suited to a diesel.

So not to worry about being attacked by the government. I'll do long journeys every month to so that would help the dpf

I've actually driven a 170 TDi dsg before which made me fall in love for the Dsg and I think the surge of the diesel gave me thrills. But Your right as I don't do the stated miles but the figures for mpg and hp/nm are so good haha

Thought the 170 was just a slightly bigger turbo. Map and injectors?
And I like the look of the alpha giulietta which is surprising as I'm a snob with car brands. Not a massive fan of the others and I think the golf is the most boring but has the dsg box haha can't have you cake and eat it to right!
Thank you for all this though!!!

If you like the scirocco then why not look at the 1.4 TSi, although looks aside the Golf a Rocco feel very similar.
