So I have a 14 year old Kirium watch that I got for my 18 year old birthday ( so has some sentimental value).

After not wearing it for a significant amount of time (2 years) I thought it was about time to make some use of it (work watch).

Anyway off it went to tag for a full service as I was made aware it might need a rebuild. Got a call yesterday saying it does so that £230. I also asked how much would a rubber strap and new clasp system be. Turns out to be a additional £150. So the question is this good value is there a specialist out there people know about. I can't see any retailer selling these (probably cause the watch has been discontinued for over 6 years) and buying second hand off eBay can be hit and miss and almost as expensive (£120).

Also I have a deep blue watch face and I'm concerned that the black strap may not be ideal..... All I do know is the metal bracelet is heavy and not the most comfortable which is why I stopped wearing it and there isn't a mass of alternative straps available due to the odd sizing.

Help! what do you think?

As far as the strap goes, you can have a rubber strap custom made to fit. Here's one of several strap makers that came up on a search 'custom made rubber watch strap':
http://www.bonettocinturini.it/en/

Since the watch is already with Tag, you may as well continue with the movement replacement.

Can't keep time anymore.

Let it go, let it go
Turn away and buy a seiko.
Sentimental value won't hurt you anyway.

Let it go, let it go
Don't hang on to it anymore.
A battery will double its value anyway.
Not sure if you're serious or not?

If i was to get a Sekio i'd be looking getting a Japan import as the Japanese range seems to hold the better ranges. However then i'm back to spending 500+ for a watch plus a nice leather strap and essentially leaving this for the draw which doesnt sit well with me.

Try Cephas Mckeough in Southampton. Don't be put off by his shop front.

Well to wrap this thread up I've taken the plunge and paid for the full quartz service and new strap with clasp.

Hoping this will reignite the desire to wear it and if not it will be a good office watch.

Strangely my similar ages Tag Kirium also cost £230 last service... went in for battery as it had stopped, came out with new PCB board, battery and full polish (first it had in 16 years)....

Looked like new and don't regret spending the money on it as still love the watch..

That's good to hear smile

All EJ said to me is the Tag notes suggested the battery being dead for such a long period had caused a blockage so it needed a few bits including a new crown...

I asked that the strap gets a polish even though it'll arrive with the rubber strap it would be nice to have this to hand.

Looking at second hand values, considering it was never an expensive watch £1000 when my parents bought it in Geneva, to see them for sale between £400 - £600 actually makes me feel better getting it scrubed up.

Mines never been off my wrist since I got it, and still stopped and needed pc but board. Think it's more about age than usage.

Ok got the call today, the watch is back from Tag....... pleased that they didn't take the full 8 weeks but now nervous at the same time wondering if it was 350 well spent.... but Dad will be pleased and that will be best outcome if nothing else

For what it's worth, my opinion is £350 spent on something that has serious sentimental value to you is nothing in the long run.

I don't care if it's a TAG, Seiko, Timex or red lettered Rolex, it means something to you and that is worth cherishing and looking after. I hope it looks and wears well when you get it back-it'd be nice to see pictures thumbup

Ok so it arrived and it was a mixed reaction tbh to the rubber strap... Picked it up with Dad as he knew I was flying past his and he's pleased... although said he could buy 3 watches for what I paid...... (Had to remind him of his Omega)

The watch will be perfect for everyday work whilst the actual watch and the old bracelet are like new again after a proper clean and polish by Tag.

It took in total 8 weeks from sending it off, agreeing work and then delivery.

I'll try to upload some pics

So as a way of an update and a way to spice up this sub forum from Rolex chat putting a rubber strap onto my watch was the best thing i did.

I wear it most days to work and when i'm going out it usually stays on!

I appricate to alot of people the cost of the new battery, refurb and strap would be expensive but its given the watch a new lease of life.

I'd recommend anyone doing the same.

Didn't see this thread first time around, it looks great on the new strap and I like the look of the Kirium!
Looking at Ebay now hehe

I got my Tag for my 30th last year, so it holds a sentimental value meaning I'll spend reasonable amounts to keep it going.

I also have a Camel Trophy watch as a gift from my father, not the most expensive watch I own but certainly the most valuable to me so as previously mentioned it's more about your connection to the watch than it's actual value.
