To Buy or not to Buy
Discussion
Gentlefolk
I'm considering buying a late '95' W124 320 Coupe, sourced from Japan. Excellent condition, but I'm just a little nervous about wiring looms and rust that you cannot see, particularly as it is top money.
Any thoughts for a potential MB newbie, previously BMW M5 and TVR owner, now into senior years and thinking time to be steadier!!
Thanks
Dave

Better to regret what you have done, rather than what you haven't!
I wouldn't worry about it, the engine wiring and rust issues are more down to our crappy weather than the poor Merc build quality.
I have a '95 124 Estate, wiring is fine, but it has a bit of rust.
Depending how much rain we have had, it does develop some random electrical issues, but that is just character.
Over all, it is a much better quality car than my crappy W220.

I have a '93 pre-facelift 320 coupe. Owned it now for a month or so and it is a lovely cruising machine. Previously had Corrado VR6 and Alfa GTV 3.0 which were great cars in their own ways but the Merc is different class and a great looking car imo.
I understand the wiring looms tend to degrade on the larger V6 engines due to the engine heat and because the looms were biodegradable. Mine was done by the last owner earlier this year.
There is a good W124 Coupe buyers guide on the Mercedesclub.org.uk website. Good luck!
