F1 2017 - Out tomorrow!
Discussion
Admittedly F1-2016 was a return to form after a couple of poor iterations, but even though I own all versions I rarely play them now. I might pick it up on sale at some point just out of interest. Having played lots of racing games/sims I've decided downfarce is not for me, there is so much more enjoyment drifting a car around a corner on the edge of grip, using the throttle to balance the car than piling into a corner not knowing whether it will stick or not, and once committed not really having much control over the outcome...
As an F1 fan I will get it eventually, but my tastes have changed now. Project Cars 2 is my next adventure on the 22nd September.

I just bought a used copy of F1 2015 (XBone) last week as it was only a couple of quid (I rarely buy brand new games as the £50 price is bonkers - that's one for another thread though).
Despite the reviews I've since seen, I don't think it's a bad game (for the price I paid!) - it's a bit of a learning curve getting used to not sliding the car out of corners (straighten up, accelerate gently, then harder) - the tyre / fuel management, well I guess that's a fair reflection of the frustrations of racing in F1 at the time!
I will buy F12017, but not for a little while.

Admittedly I haven't played an F1 game since the 1994 iteration (!) but I am loving the new one. It is serious enough for me without being too geeky and frustrating, and works well enough with a pad although I'm sure it's best played with a wheel.
Decided to see if I could do a better job than Jolyon Palmer in the Renault alongside Hulkenberg.

Can you hide the steering wheel on screen?
What about triple screen or VR support?
Tempted by it:-)
On PC: No to steering wheel removal and no to VR. Triple screen support doesn't render screens separately but works well enough and isn't too bad a performance hit. What about triple screen or VR support?

I am pleasantly surprised by this, I lean towards the more hardcore physics sims like iRacing, rF2 and this feels good enough aligned with some good AI and career. Plus the bonus of some classic F1 cars from the late eighties, nineties and 2000s.
Early days but I am enjoying this.
Just a quick bump to say this game is really good!
I played f1 2016 for a bit and it never really hooked me but this one is much better. I have been hot lapping for hours which is always a good sign. It has a few bugs which should be ironed out shortly but if you like racing you will like this.

Got this last night, I've definitely come to the conclusion manual gear changes with a pad and having to do brake bias, DRS and radio calls is bloody hard so I'm back to auto changes as I've always done on F1 games. It annoys me I can do any other game with manual gears but F1 cars just bang through them too quickly.
I need a wheel and some paddles

Thought I should get in here and update given I am the OP
I am way beyond first impressions now. Career one now up to Silverstone with Medium Practice (P1, P2, P3) , Full Qualy and 50% Race Distance.
Over 2016 its far far superior, I am going to put it on the same pedestal as 2013 which to date had been the better CM effort!
The Career mode is where I spend most of my time, the cars feel vastly different to the 2016 cars in game. Tyre models feel better, the slipstream engine has been vastly improved so in a Renault behind a Merc its not just a case of follow, deploy DRS and away you go! You actually have to really work for it if you want to get past a car, particularly one that is faster in a straight line than you!
Quite enjoyed the invitational events although the guy who "owns the cars" is a bit of a t
t
Its a solid game, there are a few issues, for example, I keep getting gear change issues, they don't tell you what is actually broken or what part needs to be changed, its pretty frustrating, changing the gearbox chucks you into a grid penalty, but it doesnt always fix the issue, once it turned out the be the control electronics, another time the MGUK!

Would this play ok with a cheap wheel?
It's been a long time since I played racing games and last time I looked (when considering one for Project Cars (which I left alone in the end)) it seemed like the only wheel that was any good at all was the very expensive Logitech one... and I'm not that bothered!
Any recommendations?

I use a G920
I've bought whole actual cars for less than one of those!!Sorry, ethnic minority Friday was my friend just in case I offend.
I got significant reductions, if I recall it was something like 180 for the wheel and 40 for the gearbox, I also got a 55 inch ultra 4K LG Smart tv for half price at 749!!
I had an Xbox 360 for years and never really bothered with getting a wheel, however after a while away from gaming I got and Xbox one.
the Xbox one was so much better I thought I would wait it out for a deal.
The wheel, or I suspect, any wheel was the best choice. I had to re-learn the games and went from being a regular top 150 in the hot lap times with a controller on Xbox 360 and forza 4 to being an utter numpty. In a weird way it made gaming interesting again, a good challenge.
Edit: I use a wheel pro stand £99 and have just noticed the wheel and pedals are £180 in Maplin, £70 off which would buy the 6 speed box.......

Playing with a pad I have had to start dulling down the sensitivity on the steering, I got through Monaco practice having failed at most of the tasks last night and put it in the barrier 3 times! Hopefully I'll get less lock and less understeer for the race tonight.
Sadly I've had the same gear selection issues and the added joy of losing random Fuel map options. Maybe the Renault just isn't reliable :hehe; I'm quite pleased to have stuck it on the podium a couple of times purely down to strategy and it's surprisingly good fun racing a car that isn't fast enough to actually win a race
