Which VR solution?
Discussion
I am tempted to have a try with one of the VR solutions...anyone have experience of all three that would suggest which to go for?
My PC will apparently handle both Rift and Vive without an upgrade (well maybe some new USB 3.0 ports) according to the comparability checks, so either is an option.
The Rift looks to be the clear favorite with the current deal on...makes it quite tempting.
The Sony one looks interesting with quite a few titles coming out...I don;t have a PS (I went the xbox route) so although the PSVR looks a decent price at 339 I would have to factor a PS and controllers into that. I do have very high hopes that the new star wars battle front game will have decent VR and that could make it a winner all by itself...who could resist an x-wing fight with VR!
Whats the current thoughts chaps on which of these is the one to go for?

I have played all three, owned and sold the PSVR and about 15 minutes ago took delivery of my Rift Touch from the postman.
For me the PSVR was the easiest way into VR, really plug and play with no worries on hardware spec to run it and 360 tracking was fine considering it just had the one sensor (camera) but I wasnt sold on the games availible at the time. The library has somewhat increased though and the controllers in my opinion were naff. Compared to when I played the Rift and Vive in a shopping mall in the states the PSVR really lacked in the sharpness of the image compared to the other two.
The Vive was great but I saw no difference between that and the Oculus, expecially for the type of games I would play and with the current deal, for me the Oculus was the obvious choice. I also prefer the touch controllers.
Just have to wait for the little one to go to bed so I can unbox and set up my Oculus.

I must admit it's going to be tough looking beyond the OR at that price...I'll be interested to hear your thoughts once you get it set up!
One thing I was pleasantly surprised at is that my PC doesn't seem to need loads of upgrades...even my CPU which is now 6 years old passed the test!

There is so little to choose between OR and Vive that most people are currently picking the Rift due to the lower price...
PSVR is ok but can't push as many pixels due to the PS4 limitations as the PC based headsets...
Everyone who is a gamer and has tried mine with Elite Dangerous or Project Cars has just been blown away, I still insist it's still the biggest step forward in gaming technology in the last 20 years and there isn't even a killer roomscale game taking the world by storm yet...
The whole discussion about the lower than HD res (which is nowhere near as bad as people would have you believe) and the screen door effect (which you don't notice for long) is forgotten once you are immersed in a VR world.
Hell even my old mum looked over the edge of a building in VR and actually stepped back nervously lol...

My mum who just turned 70 this week has always been dead against computer games as a complete waste of time, however she had a go on my brothers Rift the other day and she was excitedly telling me how she was shooting arrows (in the Steam Lab minigame) and that she wants another go
I picked up an OR this week having been pretty sceptical about VR in the past. I was persuaded by a friend and the price drop and must confess to not having high expectations.
I haven’t been able to spend too much time playing yet however my first reaction is WOW! This really is a step forward and I am excited for future gaming now more than I have been for many years.
I haven’t had time to try too many games yet and there doesn’t appear to be a single killer app yet however I have been impressed with lone echo, robot recall and some of the tech demos like the oculus dreamscape. The kids and my wife were immediately sold and blown away by the TRex and Robot Recall. They had to take off the mask with the Air car demo as it made them feel sick.
I have a very high spec PC so performance is not an issue and the current resolution is adequate. Depending on the quality of the software and settings you experience different levels of pixelation and realism. The current kit is definitely good enough to totally absorb you however I can see that a doubling of the resolution would bring the graphics close to photo realism in the future.
Very interested to hear any suggestions on which games to try next!

My brother has a Vive, me a Rift with Touch and three sensors.
Vive is the better room scale, Rift the better sat/stood experience.
That said, the Rift's headset is lighter, smaller and easier to use - the Rift is easier to set up, has less wires, is cheaper etc.
The Vive "just works" if you have the room and is ever-so-slightly more immersive because of it (those sensor stations are just better... but I've read that most will be going to camera-style soon).
In any case, there is no clear winner for me. I have a small office, use Elite and pCars and the odd table-top type games and if I had it in my living room, I think the Rift would still be awesome. It's also WAY cheaper, so there was no way I could justify the Vive.
When wi-fi truly arrives for both, it'll be fantastic. Bring on 2k/4k too please

Basically what i've been told by a guy at work with both, also i think the rift needs more connections too?Vive is the better room scale, Rift the better sat/stood experience.

Sounds familar, and i think the Vive is only 1/2 by comparison although i say this with no experience lol
Still too expensive an entry point for me in my current situation, only got a GTX970 so not enough of a decent card for a good experience so it will be a while before i take the plunge and i hope the headsets are down in price by then too and maybe even wireless tech of some sort

It's a personal thing though, so it just depends how much you rate the immersion. I know what it's like to have crappy eyesight and wear glasses (-10 prescription)...wearing the headset is like having glasses that are slightly lower prescription than you need (but you don't end up with the headaches afterwards).Everything lacks that extra sharpness and you have to look directly at text for it to be readable...think slightly better than SD in an HD world...
Don't get me wrong I would be totally stoked if the res was higher, I'm planning on getting a 1080Ti to see how many pixels I can push to try and close the gap to HD, but it doesn't bother me enough to go back to triple monitors...it's entirely a matter of personal preference. Once the next generation headsets are out with improved screens I'll be all over them but I'm enjoying what we have now.
What are the games that are must tries?
I've got Elite so looking forward to trying that out...I think I'll be trying out Star Trek Bridge Crew too...anything else? Looks like it comes with 6 bundled games to start with, are they a bit rubbish (hence being free) or are they generally good?

Well you're on pistonheads so there has to be a driving game, Project Cars and Assetto Corsa are both good in VR (I'd say Project Cars has the edge visually)I've got Elite so looking forward to trying that out...I think I'll be trying out Star Trek Bridge Crew too...anything else? Robo Recall is pretty cool...

And would like to thank you early adopters for your participation so i can get a later version if it does fly
I'll be surprised if it gets cheapy cheap anytime soon. At £400 the rift was a bargain compared with a decent TV or gaming monitor...assuming you had a PC to make use of it obviously (cheapest deal for a PC and Rift together was £1000).And would like to thank you early adopters for your participation so i can get a later version if it does fly

New versions won't be out for a couple of years I wouldn't have thought, plenty of time to get my money's worth out of it

I might think carefully about buying a Vive at the moment, things might not be looking good for HTC:

I have a Rift DK2, it's enjoyable but the screen-door effect and low resolution make it feel very much like entry-level tech. It's a developer kit after all so I'm not surprised but until screen door effect just isn't a thing at all any more I won't bother buying a new solution. It's hugely immersive, Elite and Project Cars are entirely different prospects on it than on a normal screen but for me it does impact the enjoyment when I have to squint to read text or make out certain details.

Well f
k me....that is rather good.....
Have you tried Lucky's Tale. It is really good and fun.
k me....that is rather good.....I have The Climb on my wish list as always liked the look of that and also Kingsprayer. I prefer experiences over games if I am honest but really looking to use it with Assetto Corsa and ETS2.
Just 100% Superhot so will purchase Superhot VR too.
