Hi Guys

Following on from my previous post, highlighting the vast amount of work I completed on my 987 Boxster at Porsche Centre workshop, I wanted to throw out another question please.

When I roll into 1st gear I can easily hear the linkage mechanism, also when removing from 1st or 2nd and going into neutral, is this because the engine is literally right behind my head or could this be an issue with the gear box gear linkage? Should the car slipping in and out of gears be loud enough for me to hear? Other cars are autos so I'm out of practise lol

Any advice welcome as always.

Thanks again

I can hear the linkage mechanism in my 987 - especially with the roof down! Never been a cause for concern for me.

Thankyou that really eases my concern, if I was to say to you there was an electric noice up to about the 3k rpm and then the deep lovely grunt kicks in would that also sound normal to you? My friend who had a Cayman said his did this also but I'm just looking for confirmation? Thanks

I have a 987-2 and I can hear the gear linkage move when I select gears, especially with the roof down and at low speed and its done this the whole time since I've owned it.
I like to think it sounds like a bolt action rifle, every time I select reverse to park.

My 987.2 does this. As you say, it is only noticeable at slow speeds and low revs, but you really have to listen for it. I don’t think most people would notice. Asked this to be looked at during last service and was told it’s normal. Still learning the car as well.

Well I went for a proper drive with the roof down today, and you can hear the gearbox linkage in almost every change right up to 4th/5th gear. To be fair it's a 987.1, but it's never bothered me at all.

Remarkably easy to heel-and-toe, too.
