I have just reset my ECU, I can not believe how much difference it has made to the way my car runs!!! Before was abnormally lumpy and would sometimes cut out, Cleaned stepper motor a few times which helped but after reseting ECU it runs almost perfect!!!!!!!

If this is the case and the problems come back it usually indicates that something out there in fuel injection land is misbehaving. Reseting the ECU will put it back to default but as the ECU starts to adapt any problems that you have will cause it to potentially get things wrong and the car will start to misbehave.

I did have a misfire problem for a while but cured it with new plugs and leads, maybe that was why the ecu was getting it wrong?? !!

Resetting the ECU...how is this done?
Is it something that should be done though...judging by Steve's reply, the ECU adapts to any problems the engine develops - true?

Take 7lb lump hammer. Remove connector from ECU. Threaten ECU with hammer and tell it to get its act together. Replace the connector on ECU and it is reset. The 7lb hammer and talking to is optional as removing the connector for a minute or so will reset it and clear any fault codes.

Should you do it? No. Only as a last gasp effort to get you home. Periodic resetting to solve a problem is not curing it.
