Hi, wondering if can help. I originally bought a car in the UK a couple of years ago and moved it over to Jersey. I had to pay additional GST on it on arrival... now I am moving it back to the UK. I am staying for a bit in Jersey, while the family move to UK.

I guess the questions are:
- do i register it in UK in my own or my partner's name?
- I presume no VAT will need to be paid again?

No idea on this stuff. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Shewie

It gets a bit complicated if you're not moving back with it. If you're relocating your permanent residence to the UK it's pretty straightforward as no VAT etc needs to be paid. It's just a case of registering it with the DVLA / HM Customs.

If you're just trying to re-import it it'll depend on how old it is and how long it's been out of the UK as to whether there'll be any tax liability. Do you still have a copy of the original V5? I made the mistake of not keeping a copy when I moved to Guernsey, which resulted in a load of hassle with the UK authorities when I tried to re-register it in my Dads name to sell it on. All was okay in the end but it took about 3 months to resolve and was a right pain. Unless it's something special I'd try and sell it in Jersey before you leave or move it back when you actually return...
