Audi a4 avant 3.0 tdi Quattro 2010 ish
Discussion
Hi guys. Anyone know alot about 7 year old audi's?
I'm looking at the 3 litre v6 tdi Quattro from approx 2008 to 2010. In automatic gearbox.
Would like to know people's general views on it please?
Any big pit falls to be aware of? What to look out for?
Any general information on the model year, type of gearbox it is etc would all be very welcome.
How does it compare to a BMW 3 series tourer 330d v6 of the same time period?
Thanks.

I had a 10 plate from around 5k to 80k. Great car, but from 75-80k the following (expensive) faults:
DPF full - Audi wanted to replace it, in the end got it flushed out, but while the local indy had the DPF off they noticed the turbo was on the way out with an oil leak, so that got done too (3 times as it turns out they didn't have the right kit to set up the turbo properly so it went somewhere else).
EGR fault, limp mode, expensive due to labour costs
Occasional judder from the S-tronic, did it for all the time I owned it (stuck to oil change intervals)
Slight coolant leak from head (left it, was tiny)
Front hubs warped causing new brake discs to warp after a couple of k.
Cargo cover failed (the locating tags stuck in meaning it couldn't be fitted securely)
Drivers side vanity light lost voltage (who cares)
Rear diff failed, at this point Audi wanted 5k for a new one and indy was telling me to bin the car. In the end got a 2nd hand one from Latvia for 200 euros (gotta love ebay) which they fitted in a couple of hours.
Gingerly drove it to the nearest garage and traded it in for a GTD.
Get a code read done, mine had loads of electrical faults that never seemed to effect anything), drive it for a decent test drive. Check tyres (fairly costly).
I miss the car but it taught me that the days of diesels doing mega mileage are long gone, all the ancillaries die long before the core ICE is hardly worn.

Damn thats around the mileage I'd have to be looking at in a 6 to 8 year old car too and for my £10k budget. Maybe it's safer to go older?I really want a six cylinder diesel. It seems the best combination of power, economy and refinement and have always liked the A4.

Similar position but was looking to get an 09/10 Q5 wiht 80k on the clock I really want a six cylinder diesel. It seems the best combination of power, economy and refinement and have always liked the A4.
I drove the 2.0 and felt under powered for the car so was hoping to get the 3.0.
Is the S-tronic really a money pit at that age and mileage? I really dont know what else to potentially look at...

I read on another forum that the tiptronic was the better gearbox. Its so hard to find any reliable information. An internet search on these things 95% of the time just returns useless information.I drove the 2.0 and felt under powered for the car so was hoping to get the 3.0.

It looks like the older 3.0 litre doesn't get the same MPG as the newer (>2010) one.
There are lots of 2.0 litre TDIs around, I'd get a newer car for the money. Could then remap it fairly easily from what Ive read but it would still not be as nice as the 6 cylinder.
Edit - its looking like £10k isn't enough for what I would like, more like £15k is needed and even then there aren't many about. Yet again the market disappoints.

I got I think 11.5k trade in against an overpriced GTD, WBAC and local car supermarket both were around the 9.5k-10k mark. Dealer shoved it on his web site for 15k and it sold within 2-3 weeks, so you're not far wrong on the pricing.
If I was looking at one for that money I'd also be budgeting for a warranty.
When I originally bought the car the crappy dealer (name and shame Sheffield Audi) had it for two months failing to rectify paintwork issues so I had a range of courtesy cars, including a 2.0 TDi A6 and an A4, the 2.0 is nowhere near enough for the A6 and it's firmly in poverty spec company car driver territory for the A4 as far as I'm concerned, the 3.0 is lovely.
Also factor in the wheels, mine had the BBS on which I eventually had refurbed, only to find out that refurbed diamond cut wheels don't last half as long as the original treatment. Expensive lesson.

The quattro doesnt use the multitragic box, i am pretty sure it uses either the s-tronic or the dsg (the V6 might be the S-Tronic) as long as all of the oils (diffs, box etc) are done to service spec it should be fine
My understanding (which could well be wrong) is this:Multitronic is the CVT gearbox and should be avoided.
Tiptronic is the traditional torque converter box and is reliable.
S-tronic is the dual clutch automatic manual i.e DSG.
I'd ideally prefer the tiptronic for the reliability, relaxed nature and ability to creep. I'd imagine it goes quite nicely with the 3 litre TDI quattro.
What I'm struggling to find out is the reliability level of the S-tronic around the age I'm looking at.
Sigh who am I kidding. This is out of my price range

Hmm. I thought stronic was tiptronic, one and the same?Multitronic is the CVT gearbox and should be avoided.
