Hi,

Looking at one of these to review if "er indoors" has any faults.

Are there any ross-tech alternatives available for cheaps that will work with VCDS? Oh and on Macosx!

Cheers all

nope.

Best way is to get either Genuine VCDS which is £200+ or to get OBD Eleven which is about £60 but only works on Android as far as I'm aware.

You can get clone copies of VCDS but not guaranteed to work.

I bought cheapy from eBay for about £30, turned out to be a pirated copy of Rosstech software along with a chinese cable to connect to a laptop.
Obviously I didn't use it but if I had, I'm sure it would have been pretty good. Only problem would have been that the original program had a built in default to try to connect to Rosstech if it detected an older version was being used so anyone wicked enough to use a pirate copy would have to remember not to allow it to try to update itself.

Does it update online automatically?

Cheers, the OB option looks pretty nifty! I've got android so would be a good option.

I use OBD Eleven it is good.

Any non-genuine copy you buy must be used with the software supplied, if you try to download new software it will fry the cable.

I bought a clone cable about 6 years ago.
It's worked fine and fits my needs fine (logging and coding changes on most Mk5 platform cars).
It's never failed me and while I would like a genuine one I simply cannot justify £250 odd when this works perfectly fine and has never failed me or bricked a module etc.

I've never found them to work on Mac - They also don't work on VM (I have tried and it doesn't seem to like it).

Your best bet would be to buy a cheap laptop just for VCDS (I have a small cheap Acer laptop that I use).
