Hi all,

I've had an offer from my grandad to buy his Peugeot 508 2.0 hdi allure (140) off him for at least 1k cheaper than trade in value. It's on 33k miles, £30 tax and I'm guessing I can get at least 50mpg on a run. It seems like a no brainer as I know it's history. However I've just got a few questions as I've never owned a diesel and the last one I've driven was when I was learning 6 years ago.

Firstly, I do 15k miles of mixed driving. Is this sufficient to not clogg the dpf? He only did 3k miles last year and that was mostly to the shops and back. My plan was to give it a service and few hard long runs to clear out the dpf.

Secondly, my grandad liked to ride the clutch so I imagine it's life has been somewhat shortened. What's the cost like on a new clutch/dmf?

I apologise if they seem like dumb questions but like I've said I have had no experience with diesels and all I read is horror stories on PH. I had no consideration for a diesel however a dirt cheap price, known history and a 1 month test drive to see if I like it seems too good to pass up just because it's diesel! Just need to genuine feedback and opinions. My alternative is to go for a petrol although a variety of options seem to be short on the ground within my budget range.

Buy it off him and if it ever goes wrong threaten him with legal action. Start a new thread on here and inform us how you go.

Not sure how much the clutch may be but you should have no issues with the DPF doing 15k a year. As you say, if you do buy it the first thing do is give it a run as having only done 3k in a year may mean it is a bit clogged.

A quick google suggests the cost to replace the clutch is between £700-900 from an indie.

Get it bought, look after it using the right oil (low saps etc)

Once in a while, drive it like you stole it and if you ever have any bother with the dpf then someone like https://www.the-dpf-doctor.com/ or any number of other providers should be able to sort it.

You could even pay for one of these @ £35 http://www.halfordsautocentres.com/car-care/dpf-ma... or £85 http://www.halfordsautocentres.com/car-care/dpf-de...

It'll be fine - and don't forget to put a readers car thread up smile

Thanks for the replies. My main concern was big bills related to the DPF/DMF which would eradicate any saving made by getting it cheaper from my grandad. It's not a car I'd pick otherwise.

My main reason for the choice is so I can tick off a large car and a diesel simultaneously. At least then I know if driving a barge is for me or not.

Has anyone owned or driven a 508 and could give any feedback on what they're like to drive?
