Well after over a yr without by 944 turbo and 14 yrs ownership - should be able to go to 40k in a few months, have tested a boxster ( great in the country) and a 996 which drives nice but not quite a flexible on the twisty bits, but long term ownership is my thing, so its either a new boxster which I prefer bother interior and exterior or gamble on a good 996 around 2001/2 -
My only real concern is after 14 yrs of no problems with the turbo ( yes true) and it was four yrs old when I got her - I hear both the 996 and boxster have had some short engine life ( design issues?) and that is a concern- if they have been sorted by Porsche I would be grateful if you could let me know? Apparently Porsche got a bit snotty with warranty to some poor souls, yes they have got to make a living but is the end of the special relationship? could they be the next non descript - mainstream car companies and there are plenty? Hope not as I love the cars fo rth ebest of reasons..Whats it to be then?

2000 996 Carrera 2 with 28k miles, from Porsche dealer with full Porsche warranty.

DO IT.

Browser,

Regarding the engine issues of the 996 and Boxster, just do a search on this forum for threads about the rear main seal (RMS). There is too much to tell you in just a few lines.

My choice for 40 grand? The 993 RS (see my profile).

However, if I had to chose between a second hand 996 and a new Boxster, I would take the new Boxster. I would try to get the S model. You would need 44 grand to buy a new Boxster S with good spec. Very shortly nearly new Boxster Ss (new shape) wil hit the second hand market for around 40 grand with the good spec already paid for, if you get my meaning. A fabulous potential purchase would be a new shape Boxster S (they call it the 987) with a mega spec costing over 50 grand new......then you wander up and buy it for 40 grand. This will happen fairly soon, give it time.

I would far rather a 987 S with 280 BHP than a 996 with 320 BHP......except possibly the lovely looking 996 C4S......but it's a heavy beast and so not much faster than the new Boxster S.

I'm hoping that in 2-3 years I'll be able to get into a secong hand 987 Boxster S for 30-35 grand and keep the 993 RS purely for the track.

Is an early Turbo 4 with a few miles in that category?

I second johnny's advice.

987 Box S. It costs 750pa to extend the warranty after the first two years. If your car is unfortunate to suffer RMS troubles the warranty will cover it.

Satan's lawyer's suggestion:

You might want to consider The Continent Flatterer, too.

Not a Porsche but a Bosch Hammer nevertheless - the redoubtable Audi RS6 is falling heavily: mint main dealer cars are now circa low £40Ks and represent humungous vfm.

Factor in the ease with which additional ponies can be liberated and you should see a near 200mph given sufficient (German) tarmac...

Build quality to embarass the Stuttgartian too.

Handling? Does it really matter when you're piledriving through the heart of Europe with such monumental ease, serenaded by Lemuel Kilminster and The Ace of Spades at a respectable tilt?

In other words, a threat to the established order (certainly off track) in a way similar to what the new, E60 M5 will represent.

I have an idea - why not buy a good 928 GTS and a good 968 Cabriolet or Clubsport - and save some money while you are at it!

Thanks to all for your opinions - latest S Boxster with some miles and 2001/2 996 are neck & neck -will drive a few and let you know what happens - too old for 993 RS - wife is nearly pensionable age and Modern suits the main purpose, to just get out and drive " before I get too old..regards

Hi Browser,
Love 996 Carreras (just bought a C4 2000), but would love to know how you compare them. I'd be surprised if you don't find the new Boxter the better car for the money.......can't believe I'm writing this. However, will you always have that nagging 'but its not a 911' kind of thought?

Nice dilemma

My thought is that if you were 'loyal' to your 944 for 14 years (and why not?) you can't have too much of the old 'it's not a 911' eating you.

Nearly new Box S would, I suspect, be the best all round buy.

I'd have a 993TT ...well ...everyone alse is posting what they'd have.

Boxster anytime..the 996 is just not as much fun to drive..both are likely to depreciate like a stone and so you may aswell get one thats fun to steer

Kamal, what are you smoking?

Seriously though, perhaps I see what you're saying. Top down motoring, can be a bit more carefree in the bends than in a 911, balance is undoubtedly better. Wouldn't say it was more fun to drive, though, just more accessible.
