What fun/special £25k family car?

If you can live with 4 seats then the CLS350 Sport is well worth a look but you'll have to make sure the previous owner ticked the box for folding seats.

Jaguar XJ 3.0S Portfolio/premium Luxury: Again over budget but worth keeping an eye out for deals with the arrival of the 67 reg cars.

All the above have folding rear seats come loaded with kit & all will be a decent steer so it will come down to which you like when you test drive them if it were me I think I'd go for the XJ.

All I would say is that you definitely don't want a diesel, and you especially don't want a diesel Range Rover given your criteria, mileage and location.
There's a lot of unnecessary panic about luggage and kids, and you could fit 2 kids' worth of clobber into a Focus or a Golf, so assuming these don't meet the criteria of fun or special you might want to look at something a bit more premium. 3 Series or C-Class Estate in big petrol form seems most appropriate, although a Golf R Estate is fun and would be plenty big enough.
