Hi all
Firstly new to PH so apologies if I incorrectly don't fellow standard protocol. Also new to Porsche!

Thinking of getting a 718 Cayman in the near future.
Can't work out whether to get a new one or 1 year old. Likely to keep for 2 years max.

Any advise ?

Thanks

It depends if you want a new car specced to your requirements or not.

Or if you want a car right now or are prepared to wait.

Or if a used car of acceptable spec is actually available, or may be in the future.

Or... Or... Or...

Or if you are thinking secondhand would you prefer a 981 - many do.... If you haven't tried the previous model it might be a good idea to do so.

Or try a 981 then still go for the 718 like many have done as well.
........ but many, many more came to their senses, and bought a proper Porsche, the 981!!

If the OP is considering secondhand he ought to try both and make up his own mind.

Depends what you mean as "near future" lead times are long I ordered mine in November and picked it up in June, plenty of second hand 718s on the Porsche website.

As people have said get some test drives under your belt.

Ah, but just read how many have commented about having owned 911's and are now driving 981 Boxters, and how much they prefer them!!!

If you're thinking of getting one new my advice would be to find somewhere with the short lead time and put a deposit down. It's refundable and you're in the queue. As far as second hand is concerned, a lot of the prices don't seem like bargains to me especially on ex demo cars. Also beware that the MY18 models built from June onwards have nav, connect and DAB as standard. There was a price rise, but I'd look for a previous model used with those options.

I wasnt referring to people who owned 911 and are now driving Boxsters, you remarked on a "proper Porsche" to which original Porsche enthusiasts were up in arms when the boxster was announced to be built " devalues the brand etc etc" So to say a 981 is a proper Porsche is a bit tongue in cheek?

It's all a lot of bks - to suggest a car with the same flat 6 engine in the "right" place as opposed to the "wrong" one was less of a proper Porsche is a bit silly - unless you regard having the engine in "wrong" place is an asset. I'd be surprized if the new Alpine is panned because it's engine is in the "right" place. We shall see.

Absolutely a great feeling to drive out of the showroom in a brand-new car that is yours!!
If you are fortunate enough to be able to do it.
I have in the past and doubtless others here have also done the same.
Over the years I have changed my mind (partially driven by my wallet!) but not so much so that these days anyone can afford to buy brand-new car with so many purchase schemes available.

On this occasion unlike others I am coming not from "which Porsche is best, 6 pot or 4 pot ( in their own way each Porshe is a stunning car), My concerns would be the depreciation on any new car once you drive away from all the hype of the showroom "reveal".
Is it worth it with so many highly specced used Porsche around totake a high loss?

Decisions! decisions!

Have you looked at a manual M2 over a basic 4 pot entry level porker ?

That's where my money would go, or the 981's as you stated 2nd hand.

A one year old 718 is going to be almost the same cost as a brand new one. They hardly depreciate.

I'd certainly spec up a new one to my tastes with the marginal/negligible increase in cost and be patient for the build and delivery waiting time, than go for someone else's spec for almost the same cost.
