Hi All

Got a problem at the moment with cold idling. The car starts no problem from cold, but then has a really low idle for the first couple of minutes, on the point of stalling. Once i have set off, it is fine. I have checked the Extra air valve and it appears to not be completely opening when it is cold, thereby i assume causing the problem. I am assuming this will be a mechanical fault rather than electrical. Has anybody had experience of this or can suggest a way of reconditioning/cleaning the unit if this is the problem?

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve

I would remove the hoses and plug the plenum side with some clean cloth and then spray a fair amount of contact cleaner/Clutch & Brake cleaner or some WD40 contact cleaner in there...Its better done on a cool day...Heat it up with a heat gun and spray some more in...then allow to cool to see if its helped...

Thanks for the tip Zig. Am I right in thinking that the valve should be completely open when it is cold?

Yep.... but it is like a half moon when fully opened.

I think it depends on how cold it is.

In that case, it may well be opening as it should, but I can't think what else would cause the same symptoms

Mine is the same and I have checked everything, although mine takes ages to start...Im to do a compression test to see if its valve related...I would say the CTS but you shouldn't need it until its really cold, try unplugging it when you first start the car and then plug it back on once its warmed up, What plugs are you using and are they okay?

Worth lookingat the throttle pot voltage and whats your normal warm idle.

Also worth checking all pipe work for any blockages or dirt.
Plus its dead easy to remove for cleaning and can be tested with a heat gun in the base of it.
Also the one fitter to the xj jag fits and will help lift your cold idle as its a larger hole.
