I have been having a conversation at work regarding additional training. Its a tenuious link between what we do currently but will enable me to leap into another career (its a short term contract, so they are happy its not long term). I spoke about the idea and they have said I need to make the case for them to fund the training. I need to bear in mind their benefits (apart from keeping me: they are desperate for me in the short term...)

Whats the best approach?

^^ that

The way I've read it is you want employer A who you're with short term to fund training for something which isn't relevant to your current job but is relevant to what you hope to do long term which is not with employer A.

If you've explained it to them the way you have us I'd be asking "What on earth is in it for us?".

No employer is going to fund training if you then leave after having done the training.

I certainly wouldn't.

It's entirely reasonable for them to stipulate a clause that if you leave within a certain time after the training has been completed, then you would need to reimburse the company on a proportion basis for the cost of that training. There may even be a clause to this effect in your employment contract so worth checking.

If you really want to do the training and feel it would be beneficial to you in the long term, then I'd pay for it yourself.
