New scrappage schemes, discounts on top of discounts?
Discussion
Seeing all the press for various new scrappage schemes...
Now this got me thinking... when we bought our Focus, we got 6k off the RRP via broker quotes. If I did the same now for a new Seat Leon (by example), do you think the dealer who is offering 6k off online would do the discount AND the additional scrappage amount of 4k if you hand in your banger as well? It's not Government incentivised so I assume at the dealer's discretion.
I'm just trying to guage whether you could get close to 8/9k off a car that at best has a 4-5k discount via some online homework.
I have a Golf GTI worth around 5k, so my assumption is I would get the broker discount and then my "scrappage discount" would really just be the value of my GTI at trade in anyways, but I am trying to do some man maths to convince myself I need a new motor
Anyone with any working/insider knowledge I am all ears:
Example:
Exact Model: EcoBoost Titanium Nav Manual 5dr Hatchback (125PS 1.0 Petrol 108g/km)
Full Retail Price £21,535
Broadspeed Saving £6,175
Broadspeed Price £15,360
Ford also offer £4950 for a banger using the scrappage scheme...
So could you technically get 15360 - 4950 meaning the car costs a smidge over 10 grand??
I assume not but might make the call to see!

You can also bet that if you punt in anything decent for "scrappage" it'll be straight down the auctions to be re-sold. It won't be like the Government scheme where they had to be scrapped.
Not sure about other manufacturers, but VW have said that all scrappage trade-ins will be scrapped.BoRED S2upid said:
I doubt it. It's just marketing hype.
The pound has tanked, UK car sales have tanked (the last figures i saw was over 10%, housing has been hit hard as well) They need to clear stock, the news reported German manufacturers have been putting pressure on getting a trade deal sorted.
If it carries on like this whilst may spends the next 18 months deciding what font to use for the brexit negotiations there will be some epic deals about

Only kidding

Renault have just introduced a "scrappage scheme"; £2k for anything that was registered before December 31st 2009 however it isnt across the whole range of cars or all finance options.
ZOE, Twingo, Captur phase 1 and Twizy are excluded.
0% PCP is excluded, all other PCP and 0% HP are included, if you trade in a qualifying car you will get an extra £2k over and above all other current deposit contributions for qualifying finance deals.
"Cash" deals are £2k only, not £2k on top of existing cash support.
The scrap car has to have been registered for at least 90 days to the current owner and the new car has to be registered to the same address and surname as per the V5c of the scrap car.
The car will be scrapped, if it isn't scrapped then the dealer won't get the "scrappage" money from Renault.
Currently the "scrappage" scheme is for orders up to and including 31st September with registration by 31st January 18.
I think that is all correct, I skim read it yesterday.

You might do, I've just secured a 23% discount on a couple of 4 series BMW's and one of the trade ins against the deal was a diesel golf. It was a Euro 5 but had it been a Euro 4 the dealer would have given an additional £2k against the car.Now this got me thinking... when we bought our Focus, we got 6k off the RRP via broker quotes. So I messaged a few dealers on carwow - here's the rub:
scrappage scheme can't be used with another deal - so no dreams of 5k off a focus plus another 5k through scrappage.
Also, the car you trade in has no value, i.e whether it is worth a fiver or 4950, you are getting 5k regardless, and certainly no value on top of the amount i.e actual trade in value.
So basically, it's actually less of a discount in many cases than a standard online broker offer, and you lose your car you hand over as well.
Why am I not surprised!!!

DTD states the following for Ford on (e.g.) the focus:

So it seems that at least one of these scrappage allowances does offer a genuine discount in addition to the normal deals. However, when I looked at a focus the other week, even with this on top of the normal discount and the 0% PCP finance that Ford offer there were still better deals to be had via PCH.

interesting, Mercedes said they can stack offers, but some dealers like Hyundai are saying an absolute flat no.

I have a Golf worth 4k to trade, which isn't a good idea if they will offer the same amount regardless of car you trade in. Now if the trade in value was on top of the scrappage discount we'd be in business!
What annoys me about the scrappage schemes is the way they play the environmental card.
There's no way that scrapping my little Aygo and buying a Grand C-Max will have any positive environmental impact. If fact, I reckon that it's the other way round.
Hey there's an idea. How about a "keepage" scheme. I should be given government incentives to keep the little guy on the road as its emissions are so low.
