Can any one tell me the law on front number plates. I was pulled last week
but the number plate was displayed in the front window as the car looks so
much better with out the plate on the front.

i think it's a fine the first 3 time you get stopped. then they report you to DVLA. not sure what they do. Recently a couple of forces had a week crackdown and gave £100 fines on the spot.

But it's illegal, looks stupid, and just asking to be pulled over, if it's on the dash behind the windscreen.

Don't think you'll get much sympathy or support here.

Rule 1: Don't display your number plate in the front window. It makes you look like a bit of a dick

Which model do you own?

Did you get let off or a fine?

if you have a cherished number plate, I think the law (DVLA T&Cs, as you don't actually own the plate.......) means that persistent offenders can have their plate taken away from them...

Or is this a myth?

No Fine, just had to take an ear full and go to the next garage
and get some tape to put it on.
the car is a Spyder and got away with it since March last year.

The Boxster Spyder always looks a bit naked without a plate.

Perhaps you can get a stick on or shorter reg!

Hi,

Sorry to thread hijack OP.

Got any pics of your front end with the stick on number plate? Don't mind if you want to obscure the actual numbers etc.

I've picked up a really nasty stone chip, more like a glancing blow, which has damaged the front PU right in the centre about 2 inches below the bonnet line on my 987 Boxster. Instead of having the front PU painted, had thought about a stick on number plate instead, to cover the damage.

Thanks.

That's almost certainly illegal too. They have to be mounted vertically - 2001 RTA, though I suspect you are less likely to be pulled for it and I suppose you can argue on the Spyder that there is no vertical surface to mount it on.

This quote from the RTA may help - I think a sticker is fine (as long as reflective) and as close to vertical as possible. Really, unless you are deliberately being a tit, you will be fine. ("Tit" in clouds lying it on the dash, btw. That's just asking for trouble. IN the event that your plate 'falls off'..nudge nudge...you are better off throwing it in the passenger footwell for the rest of the journey and affixing again ASAP)

rear of every motor vehicle in such manner that the characters of the registration mark shall, at all

times, be visible from the front or the rear of the motor vehicle.

(3) No registration plate shall be fixed in the front of a trailer.

(4) Where a trailer or a semi-trailer is drawn by another vehicle, the registration plate of the

I should've said, it's not a Boxster, but if you're still interested, these are the only photos that are already online. They're not the best.. Road legal, reflective, spaced and sized properly, includes the manufacturer's details:
