Just went to look at a R32 2005 and noticed the front drivers side arch has some signs of rusting in the corner by the drivers door. Will this be a big problem?

Blimey...I was sure the front wings were plastic! (and I only had the car 7 years hehe)

This is a common problem on all MK5 Golfs. It was due to a sponge on the inside of each wing absorbing moisture and causing rust from the inside out.

It's a known issue to the VW network and many owners have had the wings replaced under the corrosion warranty (12 year) free of charge although others have had to contribute a percentage. It seems to be a bit hit and miss.

Exactly. Show me a car, any car, that doesn't have a known fault and we can all just buy it and relax.

Haha great point.

Any idea on cost to replace both wings?

What was the build date of your car? You MIGHT just be lucky enough to catch the 12 year warranty cut off, in which case the repairs are free.

If not, I reckon it's in the £1000 ball park for a pair of wings, painting and fitting at a dealer approved bodyshop. Possibly half that with Euro Car Parts pattern wings and a back street paint shop.

Well personally I would take the dealer replacement option if it was my car, but some people baulk at the price of premium brand tyres, let alone anything else. Just making him aware there are good, and not so good options.
