£150 Rover 75, what could go wrong?

Going to be a short first post about this car as I haven't picked it up yet!
Picking it up on Wednesday to immediately drop it off to get MOT on Thursday.
It's a 2004 facelift connoisseur SE. 2 litre cdti automatic. About as exciting as it gets
Needs a couple odds and ends. Tyres are getting low and it's got a brake pad notice on the dash. Going to see what else it needs and provided it's nothing fatal, smoke about in it over winter until it dies or sell it on after.
It's really not in bad Nick, couple scratches and some bolster wear but everything works, electric seats, parking sensors, electric windows all round, climate and of course the all important analogue clock!
I'll update once it's had it's MOT and see how happy about my purchase I am

I'm putting it down to pure luck. A friend took it in part exchange with something else and it's of no use to him. I drove it before the mot ran out and it's obviously different to my usual back breaking, loud drifty car I'm used to, it's really quite nice. Not overly slow (135bhp and a dollop of torque), comfortable, autobox seemed ok and it was nigh on silent. Equivalent models seem to go from £1600-3000. So even if i have to spend a wee chunk on It, I should still be quids in.
Job one on these is always check the plenum drains. If they’re blocked (and it’s veeeeery common) then water builds up in the compartment that holds the ECU and drowns it.
They’re really good cars, just have zero image and a very unfair reputation which isn’t helped by them being mostly neglected now.

I had a base model 1.8 manual with velour, but the dash / dials thing allowed Bentley fantasies to flourish on every journey.
I bought it cheap, but initially struggled to sell it on owing to keep-fit Windows and no air con.
A small ad placed in a local newspaper yielded results though, and the conversation went a bit like this ;
"Has it got owt electrical on it?"
"Not really, no. It's the Classic model, which I think harks back nicely to the golden-age of solid Rover engineering"
"Has it got that air-conditioning?"
"Again, no. It's ambient temperature zephyrs which enter the cabin via chrome vents nestling within the elegant wooden dash"
"Ow much?"
"Well, pop round and if I think it's not the car designed specifically around your motoring needs, Ill knock a few bob off"
"I'll have it then!"
The vendor, late 60's, a proper Yorkshire chap in his early 70s complete with cap, ruddy-cheeked wife and Jack Russell seemed made up.
Anyway, I'll never make a car salesman...

Just had a look and quite a few facelifts cheaper but mega mileage and lower spec. Higher ones are at dealers mainly so not an achievable price for me selling this (If I do!). But eh, it's still cheap haha. They are nice cars but very dated I think against other cars.
It probably rather this than the equivalent 3 series. Conifer, quieter. Yes not as sharp to drive but I wouldn't choose a 320d for a hoon anyway I guess.

Oh yes, if nice examples with sensible mileages they're worth good money and prices are going up not down.They are nice cars but very dated I think against other cars.
The thing is they are unique cars and a lot of people who have had one and done 250k in it are looking for another one with 100k on it.
They must be in good condition, be a diesel, have leather, some toys and be in a nice colour with not much over 100k with good history but the few nice examples left fetch good money.
A 2004/54 75 CDTi Auto Contemporary SE with some MOT and in decent nick would fetch £1000 all day long at an auction so £1600-£2000 private/retail is quite reasonable. Even with no MOT your friend would probably get £600-£700 on the block so you've done him over a bit!

That sounds about right. After BMW ditched them in 2000, MG Rover were in dire straits and did a lot of cost-cutting on the 75. You can see some of the pre-facelift running scrimpings here http://www.aronline.co.uk/facts-and-figures/histor..., there was more in the facelift including replacing alloy suspension arms with pressed steel.My present one is a facelift and nowhere near the quality of my previous PPP 2001 car.
Not that it really matters in the context of a £150 car!
I bought a Oxford built (pre any cost reduction) v6 connoisseur se for £240 earlier this year, utterly fantastic car, so comfortable and relaxing!
Sold it for £300 to some chaps who were sending the engine and gearbox to africa, I really, really regret it.
Keep us updated on how it goes op, I bet it treats you just fine.

Oddly excited to pick it up. Got a list of things to check over on it, drain holes etc.
Will be interesting to see what like it is quality wise. Had a MK1 MG ZR for a fair while and from my brief time in this one it seemed much better screwed together. Even switches etc felt higher quality, so provided it doesn't literally disintegrate while I'm driving, I'll be happy!

So I picked up the glorious beast tonight. All is generally okay. Battery was dead but charged up fine and turned off and on a few times on the way home. I think it may fail on suspension, the front drivers side either has a shagged shock or a duff spring but that's cheap enough to replace.
Dropping it off tomorrow after changing a couple bulbs and grease up the bonnet catches. I'll keep you all posted. Will need to do some before & after pics of cleaning. It's pretty minging so looking forward to it!
