Looking to spend around £25k in the new year...

I've had a Golf R so want similar kind of performance or better if possible.
The Golf R cost me around £8k over 2 years so I am looking for something that will depreciate the same or better (so probably nothing brand new)

Might have to spend a little more on the M5 but I'm guessing in 2 years - well looked after it shouldn't depreciate more than about 5-6k... and about £10k in 2 years?...

My criteria is...

- 5 seconds or less to 60... (Happy to trade that to 6 seconds if the mpg is around 50)
- 4 / 5 doors
- 5 seats

Don't want to go much older than a 2010 year car...

Anyone have any suggestions?!

On my Radar so far is

330d/335d
640d gran coupe
2013 S4
F10 M5

Thanks!

looking for a super saloon at £25k is a great price point to be looking at. I am sure you are well aware of the M5, E63 etc so I have just something a little different for your consideration;

The budget is very close to getting in to one of these and this would be my first choice for a 5 seat performance car. Not sure what kind of haggling you could do with these but the cheapest are around 25K

RS4

I know its a Vauxhall (badge) but these are epic cars, the LS3 in these later cars is just a phenomenal engine and the sound is unlike anything else with 4 doors. It may not have the panache of an M5 but will certainly win on Smiles per gallon :-)

VXR8

Something a little different and with around 400bhp and a 0-60 in under 5 secs it ticks some of your boxes. residual values should be ok with these a pretty rare sight.

B3

A great understated rare car, superb 5.0 V8 and just something different to the M3 or C63 which are so popular.

IS-F

The XF-R and the IS-F above are understated and a lot less obvious than the M5 or E63 but offer pretty much the same performance for the money. A great interior.

XF-R

I know this does not tick any of your boxes but I just love the estate XF's looks and with a lovely interior it a great package. on the move the 3.0 diesel has plenty of poke, more that the 0-60 time suggests.

XF

No problem, good luck with the hunt.

I have no doubt there is not a bad performance saloon / estate that you could pick up at this price point. Much will be down to what feels special to you personally.

Enjoy :-)

I've been offered the option of extending my golf r lease by a year...

Do you think the new M5 will have much effect on M5 prices?

Do you think M5 will depreciate by around £3k in a year? If not - theres not much point in me waiting...

I was looking at F10 M5's recently and the prices seemed quite soft for the early cars - a lot were hanging around for a long time and I saw quite a few drop in asking price quite significantly during the 2-3 months I was looking.

A few people I spoke to are expecting/hoping to get a decent BMW Approved Used M5 for early £20k's in the next 18 months or so and I can't see why that won't happen.

Thanks,

Phil

A year of driving the car you want or keep the car you're okay with? For me it's simple get the car you want rather than overly worrying about depreciation, also while M3/4 IS-F C63's etc are quick cars if you want a true super saloon then for me you need to go up at least one segment size.

XJ 5.0 Portfolio (these for me are a great buy, a good driver's car but are very hard to find but worth seeking out) I know this is another size up but go & drive one they're a good steer.

You could go M5 Zero & get a 535i which are still quick but are a remap away from being properly quick but they're a good car but no M5 they should still depreciate slowly as people panic & believe the diesel hype which means they must have a petrol.

Thanks for the comment with all the super saloons - I think m5 size is as large as i'd like to go. I think the f80 m3 or c63 size car would be my ideal size but they are a little expensive for me at moment.

Why do people worried about losing up to 8k on a car over 2 years buy a car for anything other than 7k tops?

Your maths are totally on the piss. You cannot spend £25k on a car and think you've done OK if in 2 years time you get 17k for it as a trade in. Think what else it will have cost!!!

Everything on here will have tax north of £500. Is that not a cost?

What about insurance?

What if something big breaks? Or even needs a big service? Or even two in that timeframe?

Don't cherry pick one figure out of all of them and think it's all or nothing on that alone...

I just bought an F10 M5, albeit a 20k miles model and facelift, so bit more than your budget.

The way I look at it, the F10 M5 offers better performance than the F80 M3, with more practicality, for less money. A no brainer in my eyes.

As for depreciation, I think the early cars will depreciate far less than you think. £25k is already a bargain in my eyes for the type of performance and luxury you get in an M5.

I really didn't get on with my F80 M3 but don't let that put you off buying one, but if it had to be a BMW 3 Series then I'd be buying the Alpina every time.

Also don't dismiss cars according to their segment actually check the dimensions, for example the M5 is only 10cm shorter than the Jaguar XJ.

Also I'd say the M5 is a better car than the M3/4 unless it's a Competition Pack Car, if you really want a small quick saloon with your budget IMO these are the two to look for:

C63 AMG (the best engine in this sector)

Thank you for your comment but I have factored these things in and they are not initial outlay...

I'm not worried about losing more 8k in a car in 2 years (i've just done that on my lease) - but if I can get my lease extended by a year for 2500 and then the car i'm looking at comes down 5k it might be cheaper to wait and get a well specced model or a bmw approved used model...
