Heard a report today of a motorist fined £30 in (guess where?) North Wales because he drove on a filling station forecourt with his seat belt unbuckled.

Now I've worn a seat belt since long before they were mandated, and I and my family have been saved from serious injury by our seat belts, and I appreciate that a filllng station forecourt may well be a 'public place', but FFS!

The 'arresting' officer claimed that the motorist was not wearing his seat belt "on the public road" but as this is yet another of Brunsturnfurher's priority initiatives, what's the betting the officer has a personal 'target' to meet? And in one-on-one situations with the police, the motorist is severely disadvantaged.

Full story needed for impartiality!

Was he not wearing it as he drove down the road then pulled onto the forecourt where the ticket was issued - journalistic linence?

I cannot see any copper at all ticketing a driver who takes it off on the forecourt!

There are better things to do and WE know it!

This is NORTH WALES, home of the speed camera on every street corner, fingerprinting of speeding motorists, abuse of 'older drivers', pinging people 2 mph over the limit, and hotbed of hatred for the motor car, ... get real!

Streaky

PS - heard the story on the radio whilst driving, haven't got chapter and verse, can't find a reference online ... maybe tomorrow when the search engines have caught up - S

Yes indeed Richard, wholehearted support from here. Her decision (perhaps in conjunction with NYCC?) not to introduce a speed camera policy is an admirable one, and courageous too. She's right though.

I'm still hoping that similar common sense will be shown in other areas before too long.

Can you persuade the lady to pursue a policy of actively encouraging a higher level of interest in driving, and get more people to aim for higher standards? It would be great if North Yorkshire could take a lead in that.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Spelling corrected, sorry pardon!

How can it be possible for differing regions in the UK to have such different policies on policing? For example Durham and NY dont have speed cameras (admirable to make a stand), yet others are disbanding their traffic department to rely completely on cameras?

Do the policing requirements differ so much between the areas? Or is it that its being run by a bunch of morons with little or no clue as to what they actually need to do? Fortunately it seems that there are a few who seem to have a brain.

Well perhaps we should do what we can to help some of the others develop something useful between their ears.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

I have heard that NY borrow them from other areas sometimes, but I expect 'gemini' will tell us the right answer.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Think they operate in very similar way to Durham - who have one van moving around their "blackspots" and rest of enforcement by way of traffic police.

How else can you justify huge duplication in command and control structures allowing lots of people to be big fishes in small ponds.

The concept of police authorities is in serious need of overhaul. If you don't think it matters read up on Soham or Yorkshire Ripper as two examples.

Case for defense - Was wearing seatbelt on road pulled into garage and took off seat belt as he drove into bay (claims "seconds" before stopping but that is quite a bit of time eg not coasting to a stop)

Case for Prosecution - Seatbelt campaign in full force, copper on forecourt, didn't see him remove seatbelt and therefore as for as he knew he might not have been wearing it on the road (this is the quoted statement from the police)

CPS say the police can not bring charges as not on public road, DTI say they can.
