First time at Silverstone GP on the 19th with RMA - can't wait.

Just some advice on prep please.

Time to do an oil change - where can I get the oil from without having to pay shipping costs from Radical - motorbike shops or?

Have'nt done an oil change on a car for some time - please advise what I'm missing

- Unbolt rear venturi tray carbon thing

- jack car up, remove wheels and place on axle stands

- place suitable oil tray (8 litre capacity) under sump plug

- undo sump plug or similar - I know it's dry sumped but what am i looking for here?

- let oil drain out then undo oil filter and drain from here as well

- finally drain any oil thats left from the aluminium oil tower ( is there a bolt I undo here?)

- once all oil has been drained replace oil filter - firstly running a finger of oil around the filter seal

- retighten jubilee clip into original position around oil filter

- ensure sump plug (or similar) and oil tower plugs are in place then fill oil tower

- what is exact amount I should enter at this point - what is total capacity?

- do i just fill to highest baffle in oil tower? I'm not sure on this as oil will not be hot

- once correct oil amount has been entered - re attach rear tray - check all hoses, connections etc

- start engine on flat surface and allow car to warm
up keeping a close eye on all connection etc for leaks

- check oil level - top up as required.

- is that it?

cheers

Hi Jon

I'm racing in the Enduros at Silverstone tomorrow, will let you know what setup worked best for me after the weekend if you like.

In terms of oil change, I tended to do one at least every 3 track days, if not more often sometimes.

Not sure about the sump plug you refer to ... I used to undo the bottom hose going into the sump from the dry sump tank. This drained most of the oil out of the sump and also the tank. The main problem is getting old oil out of the oil cooler which I think can contain up to a litre. My used oil was always pretty fresh so I figured any oil I missed in the cooler didn't matter given frequency of changes of the rest of it. Every so often Radical would get the car and change it completely anyway.

Once oil drained, hoses securely reattached, new filter fitted filled with oil, and jubilee clip reattached, I would fill oil in the dry sump tank, almost a whole 4L can. Then you need to get oil pressure back up before starting the car. I did this by cranking the starter motor (with fuel and ignition turned OFF) for a while, then quickly switching on ignition but NOT firing engine, just to see if the red oil pressure light had gone out. When this happened, would start the car and gently warm through, and top up the fresh oil in the tank.

Hope makes sense, drop me a line if you need anything else!

Oh, and as for oil, I did once order it from a motorbike shop only to find them MORE expensive than Radical!!! If you can find it cheaper, let me know

Jon - I drained the oil by first undoing the bolt on the dry sump tank, then the drain bolt on the bottom of the dry sump itself - is on the right hand front and should be quite obvious. Definitely much easier than doing the hoses. I always ran the engine till the oil was hand -warm to make it easier to get out, that's optional though.

The full level is about an inch below the top baffle for that tank - I think it chucks it out above this. Just fill when cold to this level, then start engine, as it drops add more till it stays the same. Just make sure the tank is never empty, and the engine will always have oil. I think it's about 5 or 6 litres all in. Halfords have an oil catch tank that does the job nicely.

I still have a full can in my garage that I forgot to give you, along with spare trailer keys and some other fluids!

It was a fabulous experience, if somewhat tiring doing both 50 min races without a co-driver!

I was overly nervous in qualifying (19th) and in Race 1 (16th) - out of 23 or so runners. Felt more relaxed in Race 2, and somehow managed to get 8th. Well chuffed with that, and that I finished both races.

Radical works team supported me impeccably. I'd recommend giving it a go to anybody with a Radical.

Next race is Donington or Snetterton, just need to sort out diary!

Andrew, I thought you drove well considering it was your 1st race ! I meant to come over to speak to you but kept being stopped by my old adversaries from the last couple of seasons asking why I wasn"t out there playing this year so apologies for that. Now you have the "bug" will you be participating in the rest of the season?
Regards
Tony.

Excellent, well done .....8th seems a very good result - though I'm sure at this stage it isn't really the result that matters.

Whats it like then being in a pack of cars - and SR3's /Radicals at that actually racing!!!! you must be buzzing when you get back in the pits?

You say you're in the Enduro - is that the first class or something that you can enter into - I guess dates of next meetings on the Radical web site?

If I came along to a future meeting - would I be able to get around the pit areas - ensuring I don't get in anyones way?

Cheers

Tony - I thought I saw you arrive in the paddock - I guessed you'd have a few people to catch up with! Its likely I won't be able to do all of the rest of the season, only the races at Snetterton and Donington, but I'm working on that.

Jon - being in the pack is very exciting, especially the adrenalin rush for the rolling start. I tried to hang on to Jonathan Coleman for a few laps after the start but ran wide coming out of Copse on one of the laps and he started to pull away. It is a great test of your own speed, and gives you lots of pointers as to how you can develop. And the first time you dive down the inside of somebody going into a corner - and pull it off of course - was a real thrill.

Back in the pits I was alternately buzzing and knackered. My neck has just stopped aching. And ears ringing.

Enduro is the series for SR3s. Bi-duro is for SR4s etc. And Powertec Cup for SR8s, awesome beasties that they are! And yes, dates are on the web site. Come along to a future race, should get full paddock/pits access. Just stay away from Mr Gandy unless you have your cheque book with you!
