So running my old smoker MK V TDi as its cheap as chips... but VW scrappage scheme got me wondering.

With the scrappage scheme (5k) and plug in grant (2.5k) could pick up a new GTE golf for 22.5k

The kicker is that the GTi is cheaper rrp and with just the scrappage scheme (4k) works out 22.5k

with 4% ish on PCP could make either pretty affordable... obviously the GTi is quicker (1sec 0-60) but the GTE returns almost double the MPG!!!

Are there any other cars out there return performance and fun for this kind of price? Focus ST isn't available on scheme!

I do about 15k miles a year and spend about 2.5 hours a day in car so needs to be something comfortable too.

I know won't be as cheap to run as the old TDi but maybe these numbers are too good to turn down??

In your case the GTE won't be doing double the mileage of the GTI the GTE works in a very specific way (ie short journeys) to get those figures (all hybrids use this calculation that can be misleading) in your case you'll be seeing between 40-45mpg at which point I'd take the GTI every time.

Hope this helps.

I am looking to replace my wife's 'old' Polo 2014 at the end of the year. Sitting in the driveway is 'Slug' my daily driver a 1995 Clio 1.9D - so uncool the kids refuse to travel in it. It's old and will probably not MOT again so a perfect scrappage vehicle. Trouble is no good deals that allow you to stack scrappage on top of discount - had a row with my local Hyundai dealer over a new i20 that he was listing at nearly £14000 the £2000 off for the old Clio. Cost to change £12000. A quick trawl of the net showed any number of dealers who would sell me a new one for less without scrappage!

I get 37 on commute in an S3; GTI being lighter and two wheel drive will better this.

No advantage in the GTE so take the fun option!

I'm assuming at 2.5 hours a day in the car and 15k a year you do a fairly short but stop start commute? If you have a charge point at work I would take the GTE as you will be able to commute for a large part (maybe all?) using e power. If you are going to keep the car a long time it would probably equate to quite a saving in running costs.
