This is the kind of school exam question I like. I presume you mean the 2.0 ABK engine in the B4 Coupe. The simple answer is "it depends what goes wrong". The more intelligent answer is that very little goes wrong, they are built like tanks. If reasonably well maintained will go on for ever and ever and ever. They have three achilles' heels so far as I'm aware. First, is that the cabin heater matrix splits – and they do all do this. If caught early a can of K-Seal fixes it, but if it's properly split then although the matrix itself is cheap to buy changing it involves taking out the entire dashboard . Second, the electric window relay invariably packs up. Easy to fix once you know where to look and how to handle a soldering iron. (Or get a new relay off eBay). Finally, the headlining eventually comes away from the roof – fixing this properly is not a difficult job but it does require a certain amount of dedication.

Apart from that they are without particular problems and I'd buy another for my younger daughter if I could find one. My eldest daughter has had hers for four years – a £900 buy from PH actually, and it's been fantastic. She wants to restore it.

Later Audis, particularly the couple of generations that followed the B4, are a bit crappy by comparison.

OK this is a guess, but I think probably mid to high thirtys mpg on a steady run, probably mid twenties around town. My daughter is still a student and I've not heard her grumble about always putting fuel in. It's certainly not a thirsty car.
