I'm wanting to get my 205 gti off the road now and restore it. It's a bit rough round the edges and I feel guilty driving it all year round, it's managed as a good daily for the past 2 years, practical and quick. But the time has come to get her inside and restore!

Anyway because I'm looking at buying a house soonish i want a cheap daily meaning cheap to run and reliable but not disgustingly slow and i'd like it to be at least a bit interesting. Budget is 1k.

The two car's I have decided on are a Rover 216 (D16 honda engine) and a phase 1 (phase 2 onwards suffered reliability issues) 306 diesel Turbo or n/a.
Main reason being I want to still drive an older car, they are both reliable and not too slow. All at the same time I like the look of them. Here's an example of one of each I have found on ebay;
Rover- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/rover-216-gsi-50k-one-ow...

Peugeot- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-306-D-TURBO-SERI...

I'm leaning towards the peugeot but I'm still unsure.

If you had to pick between the two what would you get?
Or do you have any other recommendations?
Thanks for reading

Edit: My first post please be gentle

My Dad had a K-series powered 214 Si 20+ years ago; I had a 306 DT sedan.

The 306 was brilliantly engaging to drive, powerful, smooth, relaxing and handled superbly. Both are old now but I'm sure you're fine with that. I think the Rover will be more spacious but that's about the end of its advantages.

Good to know about the 306. It's why I'm leaning towards it as I suspect the 306 would be more fun to drive but the rover would be a bit more practical. Also the rovers seem to be cheaper and lower mileage (Thank you old people biggrin )
