Hi all -

I've tried cleaning my black exhaust tips to no avail, I've tried most things including a Dremel - I've given up!

Does anyone know any after market tips I can fit?

Thanks,

Christian

Not sure on aftermarket, but originals from VW will cost around £200.

I've an S3, same problem. I bought a 'boil in the bag' type oven cleaner and left them in overnight. They came out REALLY well.

Think I may have used two packs, seeing as they gave us so many of the sods!

Thanks for the reply, do you cover and then wrap the exhaust pipes?

Eh, no. The tips come off - well they do on S3’s.

You have to get behind them and ‘chap’ them off with a rubber mallet or piece of wood and hammer. I’m pretty sure R’s will be the same – can’t see the accountants at VAG missing an opportunity to cream some additional profit by making them non removable.

Get them off and drop them into a poly bag of a size that allows two packs of the liquid to completely engulf all four pipes. I found a ziplock bag that allowed all four pipes to lie end to end, in a line, and just poured the liquid in… (I’d already prepared myself for a new replacement set after the winter, so anything was a bonus.)

As I said, REALLY pleased. (Think I read about it on PH.)

If you use sport more then all four pipes will be the same colour. Perhaps an easier fix?

On the Estate, only the outside 2 go black.

I tried with Autosol for ages, then bought a scouring pad (the green ones you can buy in Tesco for about a quid) these worked a treat, didn't leave any scratches on the tips, and works in seconds compared to hours. Just need a touch of water for lubrication.

Pre-facelift. Both will blacken on the new estate.

I've never let mine get to the point where they are really bad, but engine degreaser can be good. I normally spray some on while cleaning the rest of the car, then stay off before polishing with Autosol and wire wool.

If this bothers you then why don't you just buy a car without fake exhaust pipes wink ?

What on earth are you on about? Both exhaust tips on the Golf R hatchback are connected. The outside exhausts only work when switched into race mode.

What a tool.

Ahh okay, is that the same race mode that gives you the fake engine noise?

It is if you choose to activate it, or you can just turn it off in the mode settings. Either way, no fake exhausts on a Golf R wink

Autosol with a Dremel polishing head. Works on mine. Albeit not a golf.

Has anyone tried coke and aluminium foil?

I've heard many swear by it but never seen it done.

I could go outside and try it myself but I *am* pretty lazy...

I've used Mr Muscle oven cleaner with good results. Just follow the instructions on the can. Then follow up with some Autosol if you want shiny!

Get a can of Carbon Off and brush it on. Leave for a bit, rinse off. It's over cleaner on steroids and strong enough to shift carbon build-ups from the intake valves.

Just paint the tailpipes black. I've never understood the fascination with shiny chrome poo pipes, very 80s.

I used autosol and tinfoil last time mine were really bad, followed by autosol and microfibre to finish them off.
