A friend came round and hooked my 400 pre-cat up to his laptop.......

Can anyone explain, slowly and simply please, why my "MAF reading" is zero and what that means (his car reads 3%) ?

Its in the linear setting, try direct mode. The AFM has big voltage changes at low air flow, and far less at higher changes, so some clever mathematics reduces the readings at idle, and boosts them at high air flows, so the fuel map get some reliable linear information on the true airflow. It is normally a few percent in linear however , so try it in direct, it should read between 30 and 35%.
